Just had a scare.

I was in SuSE when I decided to boot into Windows.  When I tried it first froze, so I rebooted and tried again and I got a BSOD, then I tried to boot into safe mode twice and it worked the second time, I then ran system restore, it appears to be OK, but for a minute I thought I might have to do a reinstall.

The real part that scared me is the fact that I had not changed anything during the previous two windows boots, which pointed to hardware failure, thankfully it seems that that hypothesis was incorrect.

But it’s made me realize as a student the importance of having a backup computer.  So now I am looking to purchase such a macine.  I want to get a desktop but I have a small desk so I need an affordable LCD.  I’m still planning to use my laptop as my primary system so I also need a way to manage the space it uses, I was thinking of some sort of prop for that job.

At the moment I’m thinking of getting a Mac mini because of its form factor and my overall curiosity of operating a real Mac.  The LCD needs to be < $200.  I’m looking to spend < $700 for the whole thing.

There’s also the matter of the intricate nature in the way Word handles headers and footers that is dissimilar from other office suites, as they, by default, go beyond the margins.  So if I can’t fix that in OpenOffice or something else that is compatible with .doc I’ll also need to be able to run a Windows 98 install on the Mac, and be able to print from it, since buying Office X would most likely put me over the limit financially.

I can report that in Pages, the headers and footers are outside the body’s margins.  Maybe that’s the way it should be.  Why is it so important?

The standard format for papers at UW requires a header that is about two lines above the top margin.

Yes, in Pages, the header line is in the top inch of the page.  There is a blank space the size of a line between it and the margin.

The education price of iWork, which comprises Pages and Keynote 2, should be between $50 and $60.  I can’t check for sure.  I can report that the Canadian education price is CA$65.  I recommend iWork.  It’s much easier to make things attractive in Pages than in Word.

So can’t you save the template in Word and then open it in OO? I’m not at all sure about this. It’s just a guess.

BTW I am in absolute agreement about having backup computer. I bought a Mini for just that reason. I schedule a Backup of essential files just so I am less likely to left in the lurch. If things go wrong they’ll probably go wrong at the worst possible time.
