So, if you ran the site, what would you do differently?

No, “fire everybody and shut it down” is not an acceptable response. raspberry

We’d have a disregard for being right or correct.  Deep Thought would publish more of the most controversial and interesting authors who would care to write for us and I’d republish, if possible, existing controversial pieces on technology, geek life, and our digital culture.

Why is controversy often good?  As somebody really cool once said, “Communication strength can be judged by the anger of your audience.  If they’re angry, you’re probably starting to really think but if the response is disinterest, you’re not there yet.” Props to UnnDunn for his work.  Just release it to the public so others may add to or reprint it freely.

Also, we’d switch to open-source software wherever possible and copyleft what is written by us as much as possible.  Pilky, you may copyleft all that I previously wrote to start with and anything else I put in the blogs section if I write again.  I hereby release my writing up to and from today in the Blogs section to be freely used if the original text and credit is intact.

Bloggers have complete freedom unless they post something that’s obscene (without any redeeming value), libelous, or present a clear and present danger (e.g. writing something that encourages people to riot). The above three are not considered protected under the First Amendment, according to Supreme Court rulings. Bloggers can pretty much say anything they want otherwise; that’s how Unndunn can post what he posts and stir up a little controversy (which boosts this site’s traffic wink ).

just cuz its not protected under the first amendment doesnt mean its a bad thing.  thats why i said no censorship.  i believe that any type of cencorship is fascist.

We still want to maintain relatively clean content.  If it’s going to offend someone, it should be because they have to think about it differently, not because it outright disgusts them (i.e. pornography).  You might like it, but not everyone does.

In other words, we’re trying to keep the site family-friendly.

Believe what you want, but do understand that libel among other things could leave us open to be sued--or worse. It’s something we can’t afford.

Thanks Thriller. I absouuuultely agree with youuuu. BTW censorships is spelled this way.
Wait, is that censorship? No, I don’t think so. In fact, it’s the very opposite. Let me know that you understand.

You will only be able to be completely honest when you have the freedom to be so.

The great and expanding internet is the very embodiment of this.

OKCupid is good for dating geeks with or without glasses.  And it’s free.  It’s from the same team that made SparkNotes.com™ But why not use DT that way too?  We all want it if we’re single!

Also,
I hereby commit to the public domain all my future works on this website’s blogs.

Sincerely,
Bryan Bernstein

I would amass my armies and drive my enemies in panicked droves before me, my bloodied sword an everlasting symbol of the certain destruction awaiting those who would challenge my authority.  Dozens of beautiful women clad in silken gowns and dazzling jewels would feed me the freshest fruits and most tantalizing meats and cheeses from across my domain, as my guards carried me to and fro atop my luxuriant carriage bed.  Parades would be held weekly in my honor, the pure white horses of my stables pulling forth my chariots and charioteers, clad in shimmering gold and crimson red.  The month of my birth would be marked by weeks-long celebrations in my honor, including the performance of plays dedicated to me and the recitation of poetry praising my unique and unrivaled manliness.  The greatest minds from across my lands would be gathered to develop a workable scientific theory proving that the universe revolves around me alone, punished by death for failure, their heads carried on pikes during my aforementioned parades.  Also, I would outlaw those collapsible scooters and publicly behead Michael Bolton for the horrors he has unleashed upon my subjects’ ears.  Other than that, I wouldn’t change too much.

First I would spark the seperation of the remote trade union to attack a key area governed by the republic. Then I would casually seduce my representative in the government to call for a new leader, and nominate me. Through various techniques, I would ensure my victory and secretly create more violent conflict between the government and those who wish to seperate. I would commission an army of only the best soldiers, each with almost identical fighting styles. As the war rages, I will slowly convince the senate to grant me more and more power, until I have absolute control over the entire government. I will then take an elite squadron of soldiers and have them execute all of the members of the warrior order that, although they aren’t controlled by the government, fight along side the armies. I shall have help from the one they believe is chosen to bring peace, which I will corrupt. After they are extinct, I will abolish the republic and creat an empire, with me as the emperor.

I just had to do that.
