I guess I should start off by saying I am honored to be one of the finalists for the dt birthday celebration software giveaway(I REALLY need some new software!). I landed here from a link on macbytes, I think - you know how it is when you are out there surfing. I hadn’t had a chance to post yet, I work retail and have put in some grueling shifts since turkey day. I have always run mac but actually work as a sales rep for a pc manufacturer so I have my hands on/in both macs and pcs. I have had some health problems and other things going on creating extreme busyness that took away from my computer time so I’ve been feeling that I was losing my grip on my geekiness. I joined because I want/need to learn from you at this point but I’m sure hoping a “deeper thought” comes my way to post before the final deadline of the contest........
I too am into photography and used to be as bad as Rosie O’Donnell at making iMovies. Just love “playing” on a mac. I’m running 10.3.4 now but thinking of biting into a little Tiger meat. Sure looks delicious. I WANT Spotlight, Widgets, and all the other little appetizers that go along with Tiger. After being offline more than online the past few months, I’m feeling a little lost - things change so fast - and ready to reclaim my geek status...with a little help from my friends, of course.

My favourite little dish is the Dictionary application. Mmm-mm!
Yes, the Dictionary popup is one of the little things about Tiger I suddenly find indispensable. Even though Tiger has more than its share of annoying bugs, I would not like to go back to Panther at this point. On the other hand, I consider Panther to be the best release of OS X ever, since it fixed loads of things that were wrong with 10.2, introduced a number of new features (like Exposé), and was extremely stable, even given its 9 major updates.
And Isunshyn, I’d say you’re definitely worthy. I hope you enjoy your new software.

Tiger=Spotlight.
Spotlight=Nirvana
Not quite. Unfortunately, the many complaints abounding around the web about Spotlight hold much merit. The main complaints are, it is way too slow, it lags the Finder or your system, live searching doesn’t work very well, search results are a little sporadic (hard to search by filename, can’t search system files by default), and the interface needs some work. Given all these, Spotlight still feels like it’s in beta.
But it can be fun to play with, at first at least, and many people find the smart folders very useful.
I use it rarely. When I do, it’s from the search results window. I’ve found that the Finder is too, too slow and laggy. I find it annoying that I can’t drag and drop items from the results window, I have to show them in their respective applications (if possible). It can also be hard to find files simply by name, since it searches within every file it recognizes, and the live search update can get in the way when I see the file I want. Plus, there’s no way to view info for a thumbnailed result without going back to list view. And finally, it’s just slightly annoying to have to use Exposé to get back to the results when the search window gets buried.
All in all, though, I still think Spotlight has lots of potential. If they’d just iron out some of the interface annoyances and improve its usability (like make live search optional?), as well as speed-optimize it as much as possible (though I’d say this is a given), I think Spotlight would truly shine. No pun intended.

Thanks for the vote of worthiness! I certainly WILL enjoy the new software ( and now I want to try SpotMeta too ) ! I just need more time! Time to put Tiger on and time to play with the new software. This is the busiest time of year for my job and lately, it’s been busy with friends calling needing help with their possessed Windows machines. I blew yesterday working on a friend’s Dell. Sure makes me appreciate my mac more.
And a special thanks to you that started dt - the more I’m here, the more I like this place.
