DT too much of a Mac site?

Kuaidang brought something up which I think should be addressed here:

Has this place completely turned into a Mac site now? Where’s the CES coverage?  I notice all the “Site We Like” are all Mac sites as well.  No Anadtech, Extremetech, Tom’s Hardware, Channel9, OSNews, or even Slashdot.

A few things:
-DT is on a very tight budget. Flying staff to Las Vegas to cover CES is out of the question. The only reason why any DT staff will attend MWSF is because Arden and I live within driving distance of San Francisco.
-Our PC-using staff is, well, small. As long as this is the case, the site will likely continue to have a Mac slant. Like the PC? Like to write? We could use your help!
-As for the “Sites we Like” section, see above. I like AnandTech and OSNews myself.

I think you may want to put up the call for writers again, but make it a “Call for PC writers”. I like AnandTech, too. http://www.pcworld.com (PC World) is another good PC site, IMO.

If there’s anything specific on the PC that someone would like covered (most likely an app.), I’m open to suggestions.

The Site’s Banner makes no mention of a Mac focus. That’s too bad because it does definitely have a Mac focus. More than that, because it has a Mac focus I keep tuning in. I guess that as a poster I am a shareholder. I vote that the site should redefine itself to make it clear that Mac users are welcome.

Now I understand that there are financial considerations, This site may gain some financial gain by changing its focus. I don’t know. Personally, I think a better approach to financial support would be to contact Mac application vendors with a proposal to provide advertising.

xphiler. there is a difference between Mac-focused and Mac-friendly.  This site is definitely Mac-friendly, and I’m sure will continue to be so.  But I don’t think it was ever intended to be Mac-focused.  There is no reason the site couldn’t expand it’s PC coverage and maintain the Mac coverage as well, other than that they don’t have the personell.  But I think any changes that might be undertaken if more PC people come along to help would not detract from what you like about the site already, they would be in addition and simply round things out more.

What’s funny is Anand switched to a Mac.

You guys will never ever satisfy everyone on this issue. Dan went overboard on his site (he said so himself) and there is still whining that he isn’t fair enough to the PC.

Like you said, more PC users need to write, that’s all. If you have a policy where anyone can write about Linux or Windows or Atari, you don’t need to label your site “Mac friendly”.

What’s funny is that Anand stated himself that he was not a switcher, but a dual-user.

Yeah, so am I. Most Mac users are. A huge monopoly will do that to you. wink

His main system is a Mac. Call that what you will. My point was Anand isn’t a PC-only site.

Show me where he stated that his main system is a Mac.

It was in his daily blog after he was finished with his time with the Mac. He clearly stated it was now his main system. In his summary article, he now says something about not being a “complete” switcher because he uses both, like I do.

I don’t really feel I need to go scour through his archives and find the quote for you. If you don’t believe me, that’s fine.

.... and I don’t care what he’s using, freedom and all that jazz, but there’s a popular belief that says that once a Mac lover - always a Mac lover.

I for one believe in it. Who in his right mind would continue to struggle with an archaic system with such an exaggerated complexity? I bet there are a legion of support technicians who want to keep their jobs, but they are in minority.

I’ve spent years with Windows at different companies and at home with people I know and have helped them more to solve problems than to actually produce something, so I bet it was more than a whiff of fresh air the Anand guy felt when he tried out a Mac for the first time.

But honestly, that’s about it. Frightened? I’m not, I like being proficient with another OS/platform. And I have enough other PCs in the house to handle my gaming or any sort of tweaking needs I have to fulfill. The G5 will most likely remain my AT-Work machine.

I think this site has definitely moved into Mac-focused territory.  Most of the news items are Mac based, mosto f the reviews are Mac products and so on.

3 Easy steps to rectifying that:
1)Write article.
2)Submit it.
submit news
submit reviews
submit interviews
submit tutorials
submit opinions
3)There’s no step 3!
