I’m on cable, but I hate that I’m not on an even faster connection. Really, in 2005 we should all have more bandwidth than we do. Why is progress so slow on this problem?
No, I mean why has competition failed to make them do better?
I think it’s like Arden says, economics 101. Every sound company tries to get back much more than what they invested.
It’s slow here in hi-tech Sweden too, even if the market is regulated. Our state monopoly Telia lost its exclusive position many years ago and the market is still controlled so that no company is allowed to dominate or at least take advantage in an illegal way. The progress is slow anyway.
It’s here much like with MS in the US, but I believe the regulation actually works here.
Another thing is that (almost) all the companies in a particular field sometimes will fix their prices, so no one undercuts or outperforms anyone else more than a certain margin, guaranteeing that prices will stay relatively high for relatively poor service. I imagine this is going on to some degree with ISP’s. I can’t imagine it’s completely not possible (or economically feasible) to wire every home, every street with a T1, T3, OC3, or what have you, since other markets, like hard drives, have shown that if the companies all work together to improve their products at a greater rate than any artificial caps, the results can be phenomenal.
Here’s one thing...sites passing rumors off as news! I hate it when the Mac news media takes Apple rumors and report it like it is going to happen without a doubt. An example of this: the rumor that Apple is going to kill Firewire. O’Grady says “Firewire’s dead” and some people have said “OMG! Firewire’s dead! One11111!!1!!”. IT’S AN UNSUBSTANTIATED RUMOR!!!
Another: this goes beyond the net but is most prevalent...people who always assume the worst about others. I know you need to be vigilant, there is a point where vigilance becomes paranoia. I’ve experienced it a couple times since starting this site with Pilky.

Quite right! Hyperbole is the most frequently used tool of commercial commentators. Thank you for posting this.

Ditto. A considered response is much more work, isn’t it? I think that’s why the bulk of ‘net commentary is frivolous.
I mean that it is much easier to post an ill considered response than it is to think about a post, do some research, and then compose a respectful reply. I’d like to spend some time researching the evolution of correspondence on the internet. My feeling is that generally, there is a greater tendency to relevant response as the the internet ages.
