Could someone explain the whole iLife rating thing to me?

Could someone explain why iLife doesn’t count. Why isn’t it even in (). MSN Messenger is included but does not come with Windows XP. It is a download. Why does that download get included but iLife doesn’t. I understand cost differentials, but iLife is “free” when you buy a new computer. Why not give it a score in ()?

If I got a computer, installed XP, there would be no MSN Messenger. Same with iLife. I don’t get why one is included in () and one isn’t.

The reason Mac OS X doesn’t have any video editing software on it is because it comes with iMovie and iDVD. There is no need for more basic applications. I don’t have to pay for iLife when I get a mac, I don’t have to pay for MSN Messenger when I get a PC. Where’s the difference? If you are installing Mac OS X you have to have a copy of iLife installed on your mac (unless you uninstalled it).

I understand why iLife was not included, as it doesn’t come with Mac OS X, but then why is MSN Messenger included, if XP doesn’t include it?

Thanks for the great site!

First of all, welcome to the forum!

The reason for not including iLife is outlined here:

Basically the idea is that anything freely downloadable from the manufacturer can be counted, but software you have to pay for is not.

Makes sense

I still think that since every computer running Mac OS X has iLife on it, it should be recognized in some way.

But thanks for the explanation

That’s not exactly true. If you bought your computer anywhere between 1999 and Jan 2003 it didn’t have iLife on it. If you took one of those systems and installed the newest osx, you still wouldn’t have iLife.

Now compare that to XP. If you have any version of xp from any time frame of computer which can run xp, you can get msn messenger for free.

Right. Because iLife’s presence on your computer depends on so many factors outside of just the OS, it’s unreasonable to include it. Like LDM said, if you bought your Mac before January 2003, it didn’t come with iLife. If you bought it between January 2003 and January 2004, it came with the first version. Between Jan 2004 and Jan 2005, it came with iLife ‘04. Etc., etc., up to iLife ‘06 today.

The iLife apps are not part of the operating system; the version you have depends on when you bought the computer; and upgrades are not free. Including it in the site would REALLY be bending the scope.
