iMac start up problems

I have had my iMac G5 (1st generation) for about 3 years now. For the last couple of weeks, I’ve had to turn the thing on and off an average of 6 times every time I want to use it. The first couple of times I generally get a gray screen that turns off with barely a touch to the power button. Then , I get the apple screen, and my fan gets started. Then I have to hold the power button in for about 10 seconds before it shuts down. The next time is usually when it gets it right.

Any suggestions, and has anyone ever heard of this problem before?

Any help is deeply appreciated

Deb

You could try resetting the SMU, but that is a complete shot in the dark:

Strange.  I’ve had problems with my iMac (1st gen iMac G5, 1.6 Ghz, refurbished from Apple), such as an extreme reluctance to turn on (caused by a failing power supply, which ultimately kicked the bucket and was replaced), but not what you’ve described.  Try replacing the little battery inside the computer, and if you have the hardware test CD that should have come with it, run it and see if any of the computer’s internals are at fault.  If worse comes to worst, back up everything on the computer using a tool like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner and completely reformat.  If all else fails, see your nearest authorized Apple repair shop.
