My new Apple Cube should be coming in by the end of the month while Apple will probably announce a new one tomorrow [edit 10/19/05: not yet but feel free to post when it happens]
Anyone have experience running a G4 that’s around 500 mhz in modern OS? What’s the best OS for that processor speed because I am a power user and I love to surf the web very very fast. I could upgrade the proc. on the cube but I’m not at that point just yet. We’ll see.
I installed Tiger on a 400 mhz cube. It ran just fine. Panther was on it before and that too ran just fine. I don’t know if there was enough performance difference to make any difference. I’d choose based on features.
Oh great xphiler. So you gave me the information I needed. But what kind of activity did the cube user (you?) use it for? As I said I’m an information-hungry guy surfing the web at lightning fast speeds (ideally).
Well I don’t know how much the processor might affect your browsing speed with a single window open. Probably not too much. If you had multiple windows and apps running you would definitely be frustrated. I did see a dual processor upgrade for the Cube. I was thinking I might make an offer to my friend for the cube. It would make a fine media player for my bedroom. Of course the Mini has more power but the cube was a breakthrough in design.
You already have a 3.5gb RAM system. Why not use that monster to power other devices? Like a SqueezeBox ($189/$249 wireless or wired) with screen for audio and a TiVo, MythTV setup, or better yet the Phillips 642 DVD player with multiple format supports ($89 or less). Add in some speakers and you’re set. My Klipsch’s have two inputs for audio sources.

Also, with the Cube there’s no audio out. You need to use the speakers that came with it or the port on there (minijack), but it’s USB otherwise without an adaptor.
Anything else you can tell me about the Cube setup?
My G5 already connects to my sound system with toslink cable. If I were going to add any devices for sound in my bedroom it probably would start with an Airport express. Maybe Santa will bring one.
Well the Cube was a stock system. It came with the originals monitor, speakers and keyboard. I think it has 256 MB of RAM. I would definitely upgrade the RAM if I owned it. The owner is very uninformed about computers. He bought it at a pawn shop for 400 USD dollars. He uses it for chatting and email filesharing and porn. It seems quite capable to do that. It’s also dead quiet, which is a bonus in a studio apartment.
Yes, the RAM is paltry. The same guy who sold me mine (which is shipping FAST---should be here tomorrow and I paid yesterday) is selling another one for less than 400 USD. I can link you if you want. It’s the 400 mHz without a monitor. I am thinking of upgrading the video card to a 128mb card Raffi liked but I don’t know if it’ll overheat the system. How hot does his get at maximum usage? Any cracks from the heat? I gotta do some work but I look forward to talking.
As far as AirPort Express, the optical cable is a must. I have an extra one if you need to buy one cheap. It’s also available from...hmm...somewhere for like $20.
I want to play with my cube. It has no cracks either.
I got refunded $20 because the auctioneer listed it as having a mini-jack. Good thinking to offer a credit like that. This guy’s like a pro. His name is in this (the) auction link:
Btw, as far as the optical cable...still can’t remember the brand or store. Was it a bookstore? No. Was it Radio Shack? No---they charged $27 USD. I am forgetting
BTW, if you do get the Cube the http://www.cubeowner.com/index.php recommends putting in a fan after ANY (non-RAM) upgrade. So I’m not sure I’ll go through with the video card until I know how hot and cool my current system is. No fans for me.
Yes no fans. I think that’s one of the many features I like about both the Cube and the Mini. I really want Apple to make the remote library in iTunes respond to the same commands that the main library does. That would make having multiple computers and drives that much more useful.
If one has multiple computers on a network one can choose which iTunes libraries to share. Once shared you may choose the remote libraries from the iTunes Source pane. If one clicks on the “next” button the next song in that library plays. There is no command (button script) which will choose from multiple libraries.
Well sort of. There is just one person. This person has computers in different rooms. Each computer has storage space. The user wants to take advantage of all the storage space he has across his network.
From above:
If one has multiple computers on a network one can choose which iTunes libraries to share. Once shared you may choose the remote libraries from the iTunes Source pane. If one clicks on the “next” button the next song in that library plays.
There is no way to choose from multiple libraries and create a playlist. Shuffle only works in the currently chosen library. I want a feature that allows for shuffle between libraries.
What I would do is keep all the music where it is and network the machines with Ethernet or Airport if they aren’t already.
Then I’d go into the iTunes prefernces in each one and disable “Copy Files” for adding new songs. In fact, I’d set the location of the library to a remote location...oh shoot, you’d need something like a Buffalo Linkstation to centralize storage and share one big shared folder/library.
Buy one of those until the feature comes out. Also check of course with MacUpdate.com
Well, I probably will buy more storage space eventually. However, I still want to maximize the use of my current storage space. I have 2 drives on one machine and 1 on the mini.
It’s the sound of my cube...just a little electricity. Nothing else. Nada.
I gave my PowerBook to my brother today for a week trial. He is made.
