What’s the most accidental damage you’ve caused to your computer? My iBook has a few scratches from the time I dropped it onto the floor. It slipped out of my hand, bounced off the floor, hit the wall, and came to a rest with its lid partially open (it was closed).

This guy, however, had much more catastrophic damage: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=139428

Yikes! big surprise  wtf  ohh  shock  excaim

A few years back at the laptop-switchover time (when, as far as I knew, we just got a new computer for no particular reason - actually because of father’s work but I wasn’t informed about that, and we sold the old one) the CD-ROM drive died three days before the warranty - it wouldn’t stay shut, so I put a book next to it and I didn’t tell him about it until the day after it happened. I don’t think he would have been too happy if I’d waited much longer… gulp

I’ve dropped a different laptop onto the floor as well while trying to carry it with my one-handed Grip Of Death*. Apparently we did buy the high-quality carpet, because it didn’t seem at all the worse for wear. So, I kept that one to myself.

Oh yes… and one other time during a holiday in England we were with my parents’ friends for two days. Their computer was broken; I was given permission to go and have a look if I wanted, and promptly went off. And switched the lever on the power supply - on purpose, but not really knowing what it was for - and thus frying it. Mmm, smoky. I put it back and said I didn’t know what the problem was, it wasn’t even turning on for me. And we left the next day, and they don’t know I did it either.

And, while on my Year 10 work experience (at a computer shop, I don’t want to do it as a career but it was a fun place to go) I think they overestimated my abilities a bit. I only ruined one stick of 128MB RAM though, didn’t tell anyone, and quickly smartened up and didn’t do anything else wrong. Except electrocuting myself, but it was only a twinge.

*It wasn’t the grip, I’d been eating chips and my fingers were ‘chippy’.
Edit: One other thing - don’t take keys off laptops. It’s not worth it, I took 20 minutes to put just one back on. Granted, I wasn’t using a screwdriver or any other tool except for the spacebar.

Nick, your signature is broken.

I forgot about the time that I broke a small part on my iMac (the power button if you must know) when taking it apart to replace the hard drive. Using a little tape and voodoo, I managed to fix it.

Oh, and then there was the time I broke my period key on my old iBook when trying to clean out the keyboard. My brother found some CrazyGlue and glued it back together.

Oh, and the time I forgot to put the RAM back in my iMac (different hard drive adventure) and tried starting it up sans RAM. Nothing got broken, but I had no idea what I just did. raspberry

No wonder I don’t trust myself with hardware!  red face

Worst damage I’ve done was prizing the processor daughter board out of a Powerbook G3 - I snapped the processor in two… OOPS!

Other than that no damage stories - although I’m now in a position that Nick is very familiar with… My iBook has a failing logic board, and it’s not in the extended repair program sad

Bob

EDIT: /me realises we have no sad face smiley

Remind me not to let you guys near any of our computers…

I don’t think I’ve actually messed anything up, fortunately, though I have been unable to fix problems before.

I dropped my old laptop and it bent the power cord.  One of my relatives also put my old laptop next to some speakers and ruined the hard drive.

My puppy attacked my power adapter--twice. Once she attacked the plastic part of the tip and left bite marks. The second time, she bent the metal rign around the tip that plugs into the computer. Fortunately I was able to bend it back into shape.

Bad dog…

Once you get the hang of it it’s pretty easy, I was typing too fast on my laptop and knocked several keys.

If the dog was mine she wouldn’t have done it a second time…

ive never really hurt my computer before, but the funniest thing happened at work.  a guy was buying a new laptop.  he got the new 12” powerbook w/ superdrive.  he also wanted a 17” monitor for it and got a viewsonic.  so he comes to the front desk and checks out and everything went fine.  he even got applecare and a 2 year warrenty on the monitor.  so hes going out to his car in the parking lot, and i can see him pretty decently.  he opens the door and puts the monitor the back sit, closes the door, and gets in the driver seat.  but one things wrong, he forgot he set the laptop on the roof of his car.  he goes to drive forward a little bit and and the powerbook falls 5 feet to the ground.  this guy has an SUV too.  and he backs over the powerbook, and he completely. totally. demolishes it.  he then proceeds to come in and yell at us because he backed over his own laptop.

*shakes head*

I could never afford a powerbook, so if by some off the wall chance I should aquire one I sure as hell wouldn’t be that careless with it.

Oh man… I would be busting up laughing, and obviously trying to hide it when he comes back in to bitch about his own stupidity.

Was there any way you guys could replace it, or was he out $2000?

Did he pay with check or a credit card?  If he’s in possesion of a few brain cells he can have the bank return the check or the CC company refuse the charge.
