If early electronic can be categorized as POP then,
“Sphinx Lightning”, 1983, by Tangerine Dream,
or possibly
“Equinoxe”, 1978, by Jean Michel Jarre.

In Mac Software???

Do you mean Pop as in “popular,” or as in “bubblegum pop” a.k.a. Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, etc.?

I mean the former not the latter.

I’ve got a few possibilities… great stuff like Stairway to Heaven, Hotel California, Bohemian Rhapsody, or Comfortably Numb.  Whether or not any of these could actually be called “pop” instead of just popular is debatable.

Can you think of anything more recent?

“The Greatest Pop Song Ever Written”?  Are you looking for great writing or great performances?

I nominate these performances:

“I Know You’re Out There Somewhere” by the Moody Blues,
“Baba O’Riley” by the Who,
“The Wall” by Kansas, and
“Layla” by Derek and the Dominos.

There is good new music, but it’s harder to find than good old music.  This is because most of the bad old music is forgotten, whereas the bad new music hasn’t been filtered out yet.

So then, what’s an example of good new music?

It juts dawned on me that I usually don’t like pop & rock but a song from the 80’s, by Prince and his group The Revolution, “The Beautiful Ones”.
He cries out his love for his woman and pleads to her to love him, not the other guy.
A very powerful and emotional song, and is using original synthesized sounds so typical for the music twenty years ago.
a1c5e76a.jpg

Baby, baby, baby
What’s it gonna be
Baby, baby, baby
Is it him or is it me?
Don’t make me waste my time
Don’t make me lose my mind baby

Baby, baby, baby
Can’t u stay with me tonight
Oh baby, baby, baby
Don’t my kisses please u right
U were so hard 2 find
The beautiful ones, they hurt u everytime

Paint a perfect picture
Bring 2 life a vision in one’s mind
The beautiful ones
Always smash the picture
Always everytime

If I told u baby
That I was in love with u
Oh baby, baby, baby
If we got married
Would that be cool?

U make me so confused
The beautiful ones
U always seem 2 lose

Baby, baby,
Baby, baby,
Baby, baby,
Baby,
What’s it gonna be baby?

Do u want him?
Or do u want me?
Cause I want u
Said I want u
Tell me, babe
Do u want me?
I gotta know, I gotta know
Do u want me?
Baby, baby, baby
Listen 2 me
I may not know where I’m going (babe)
I said I may not know what I need
One thing, one thing’s 4 certain baby
I know what I want, yeah
and if it please u baby
please u, baby
I’m begging down on my knees
I want u
Yes I do
Baby, baby, baby, baby
I want you

Yes I do

Thanks for that. I don’t know if I remember it. My fave song from that period is V2 Schneider by David Bowie.

The one by Bowie I remember the most clearly from this time period is “Let’s Dance”.
Otherwise was Bowie too much pop & rock for me.

V2 Schneider is from “Heroes” I believe he collaborated with Kraftwerk on it or intended it as a tribute. It’s very different from all but his very first album.

I had finished with Bowie by the time “Let’s Dance” came out. Except for “Under Pressure” with Queen.

But I thought that’s your opinion of everything. How can I tell if there’s anything that you think that sucks less or in fact does not suck at all. Of course if sucks means bad then “blows” must mean good since that is the opposite of “sucks”. So then something that “really blows” much be much better than something that “really sucks” no?

Honestly, I think the best Bowie song is still his first one, Space Oddity.  It just transports you everytime you listen to it.  Such a simple, yet powerful song.

Hehe, right.

Seriously though, from a technical standpoint and if we look a little closer at what is actually produced we can see very badly mastered music. I’ve always advocated good preservation of dynamic range in the music, meaning the difference between the weakest and strongest signals should be preserved as much as possible.

Looking at what is usually produced are the dynamics often completely destroyed to get louder music. Loud music = good music for a lot of producers and musicians unfortunately.

Then if looking (or hearing) how much is blatant copies of earlier creativity then I can’t do anything else but agree that most of music through time is bad.

In the context of good and bad, suck and blow are synonomous, they are both used to describe something that is bad.

And I don’t think everything sucks, for instance, I think Mario Kart DS is kick ass.
