You know, if we had spent all of our development time and money on compression algorithms, we could probably subsist on 40 GB drives.

Most are stuck with mediocre ZIP which is using a dictionary based algorithm which replaces strings of letters with a pointer+length, and Huffman which translates more common letters to fewer bits and vice versa.

The best in the world compression software use prediction by partial matching (PPM) or Burrows & Wheeler transform (BWT), they both use prediction usually together with a superior arithmetic coding algorithm instead of Huffman trees. StuffitX is one such application.

Movies and images are usually compressed unless you like BMP (which sometimes may use runlength compression which works badly most of the time). So the only files I’d like to see more commonly compressed are text and everything in the network (which I’d bet is mostly text, like HTML and so on).

I lost the slashdot.org link but there should be a 10-20% improvement in non-video compression that’s has a chance.

As far as 750gb, I’m in because the price is good.  500 or so.  But I want Apple to first make DVD -> hard drive/iTunes software.

I have over 400 GB of digital media on my drives and another 2 TB on optical media. I’d certainly love to have all that on a 40 GB drive.
