Which GPS for car to buy?

For USA I need a simple, easy-to-use, user-friendly GPS you can buy and out of the box you just stick it to the windshield or on top of the dash...nothing permanent.  Please advise on which to buy...I wouldn’t expect to pay more than $500.  That’s enough, right?  Should be more than enough I would hope.

We already hook up our iPods via cassette adaptor.  The focus is not on the entertainment features.  No DVD player feature needed.

Just want audible and visual alerts on par with a luxury nav system...all the cost going into the the main feature of GPS navigation and high quality maps.

I’d like the GPS system to remember a decent number of regular destinations in its memory.  I’d like it to also know destinations I would find of interest with a priority towards hotels and vegetarian food.  It has to be functional and have to do with what is necessary.  Nothing fancy.  I can get to the extras later if I find a good starting place.

Let’s start with this one.  Anyone know a better option?

Is TomTom better dollar for dollar?

Hopefully the voice won’t sound horrible on either.
