Ars Technica linked to an article about changing your Mac’s gamma from 1.8, the default, to 2.2 Try it out from the Display preferences pane -> calibrate which launches a wizard and eventually asks you to enter a gamma value.  See for yourself!

I tried this and like it so far.  Apple even recommends it (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302827 )
