Geek Toy of the Week

iClip Lite 1.1

August 14, 2005

I love OS X. I’ll take it over OS 9 any day. But there are a few features I miss from the Classic days. Aside from a Finder that isn’t an inconsistent mess, the biggest feature I’d like to see is something to replace the Scrapbook. Fortunately for me, iClip Lite comes to the rescue.

iClip Lite is a Dashboard widget with a simple concept: it will store multiple clipboard items (URLs, text, images, etc...) for future use, much like OS 9’s scrapbook. Adding an item to iClip Lite is easy:

Step 1: copy something to the clipboard.
Step 2: invoke Dashboard and open the iClip Lite widget (if it isn’t already open).
step 3: click the paste button (upward-pointing arrow) below any frame.

Retriving an item is just as easy:

Step 1: invoke Dashbaord and open the iClip Lite widget (if it isn’t already open).
Step 2: copy the item you want (click the downward-pointing arrow below the frame).
Step 3: paste it where you want.

Easy. Quick. Simple. About the only thing I see missing is the ability to drag an item into Dashboard and dropping it onto the widget (if it’s even posible).

That’s not the only trick iClip Lite has up its sleeve. From the iClip Lite download page:

Another handy feature of iClip lite is that it can be used as a file launcher. Simply copy a file (or even multiple files) in the Finder and paste them into a clip bin in iClip lite. When you double-click the bin, the file opens. This can be useful for launching applications, documents, and folders.

Cool. In fact, it’s cool enough to be declared Geek Toy of the Week.
