iTunes Hack disabled by Apple

Just three days after it was released, the PyMusique application has reportedly been disabled by Apple. The company released a terse statement to that effect:

“The security hole in the iTunes Music Store which was recently exploited has been closed, and as a consequence the iTunes Music Store will now sell music only to customers using iTunes version 4.7,” the company said in a statement.

The need to upgrade to iTunes 4.7.1 will likely annoy a significant number of users still on earlier versions of the software, as the new iTunes version places further restrictions on sharing music over a local network.

Where previously up to five people could listen to a user’s Shared iTunes Library simultaneously, now only five individual connections can be made per day. Critics of Apple claim that their rights in this regard have steadily been curtailed with each successive major iTunes release, while Apple’s supporters contend that Apple is not to blame for these restrictions, rather its record label suppliers are responsible. Many critics of the latest restrictions in iTunes 4.7.1 simply refused to upgrade to the new version. It remains to be seen how those users will react to the latest requirements.

The Apple Motion Sensor as game controller

A person named Amit Singh has figured out a way to use the Apple Motion Sensor (AMS), found in the latest generation of PowerBooks, as a human interface device.

A person named Amit Singh has figured out a way to use the Apple Motion Sensor (AMS), found in the latest generation of PowerBooks, as a human interface device. The AMS detects the movements of the PowerBook and can park the Hard Drive heads in the event of a sudden acceleration (such as during a fall). But now it has a new use; it can replace your mouse.

There are a number of concept videos showing a racing game and a game called NeverBall, both being controlled by tilting the PowerBook in different directions. It can also be used to scroll documents in various applications.

A free download of the software, AMS2HID, is available by clicking the first link below.

I just hope that you don't miss it while your heads are in iPod heaven

I just sent this to Apple:

“I know that it’s unlikely that you actually do something about this and you probably hear stuff like this all the time, but I think that when Tiger is released you need to advertise the hell of it and the mac mini.

PC users may not have the price excuse any more thanks to the Mac mini but they do have another excuse, lack of knowledge. The majority of PC users still think of the Mac as a good looking, expensive computer that can’t do a whole lot because it’s a PC. And through out the years Apple has been guilty of playing this card with many of it’s advertisements. I know that a lot of your income comes from hardware but let’s face it, the majority of people don’t use the Mac just on the hardware (it’s just a nice bonus to have nice looking and well built hardware).

The main reason people use the Mac is the Operating System and the software. So show off OSX and show off iLife. It’s no good saying that they come with every Mac when most PC user don’t know what they are and what they can do. Show spotlight and ExposĂ© and dashboard and core image. Show how easy it is to take a photo collection and turn it into a DVD. Show how easy it is to use these with your iPod.

I remember seeing an advert you made once that showed a Dad helping…

New Powerbooks

I like everything about them except the lack of G5

I never touched on the new PowerBooks, themselvesÖ just the new scrolling technology, so I figure Iíll say something about them.

Basically, I like everything about them except the lack of G5, and the lack of a new video chipset.† The new SuperDrive is nice, the Bluetooth 2 is nice, and everything else seems solid.

I truly do think, though, that the TiBooks were better-constructed than the whole AlBook lineÖ Iíve owned three TiBooks and two AlBooks over the years (Three AlBooks if you count my brotherís,) and the TiBooks held up a lot better.† The worst thing that would happen to them, even after being dropped, was a scratch.† The Aluminium powerbooks, though, seem so willing to shatter at the slightest touch.† Could just be my lemon-flavoured experiences, though.

That is all.
