RETRACTION: iPod touch: iTunes account optional
Okay, so sometimes you get it wrong.
As you remember, I wrote a short blurb about a section in Apple’s iPod touch features guide PDF that states the following:
Before you can use any of the iPod touch features, you must use iTunes to set up and register iPod touch, and to create an iTunes Store account (if you don’t already have one).
I am here now to issue a formal retraction.
AppleInsider got their hands on an iPod touch and wrote a review. They note the follwing:
Once plugged in correctly, iTunes asked me to register, but allowed me to skip that step and go to the typical setup page.
And as it turns out, an iTunes account is not required after all, according to multiple reader reports, both here and at The Unofficial Apple Weblog.
I’m sorry for any confusion the previous article may have caused. I believe in doing the right thing and getting the facts right, but sometimes you mess up, and when you do, man does it suck.

Laptop theft strikes UC Berkeley
This morning The Oakland Tribune ran a story about a string of laptop and personal electronics robberies taking place on or around the UC Berkeley campus.
One such robber walked up to patrons of an outdoor cafe located across the street from campus, went from table to table and calmly showed a gun to customers, demanding their laptops. Scary. 
In other incidents, two teenage boys shot a grad student with a BB gun and attempted to steal his bag. Also, students had their cell phones stolen outside the Unit 1 and Unit 2 dorm complexes at roughly the same time as the thefts at the cafe. The Oakland Tribue spoke to Berkeley Police Department Sgt. Mary Kusmiss, who notes that “People should just be mindful not to resist a robber. Just give your property up.”
Having been a student at UC Berkeley and also having worked for the on-campus computer store, I can tell you that laptop theft is not too uncommon on campus, however most are crimes of opportunity (e.g. an unsecured laptop left in an unlocked room). The Oakland Tribune notes, however, that “In the past month, UC and Berkeley police reported 17 strong-arm robberies in which a…

Free your iPhone from AT&T… for free
In news that can’t make AT&T happy, a free iPhone unlock application has been released jointly by the iPhone Dev Team and gadget blog Gizmodo. This follows recent unlock software releases from iPhoneSIMfree and others. The difference is this software is being made available completely free of charge.
Currently, the iUnlock software is immature and not for use by the average joe, but if you feel up for it, check it out.
I think it’s going to take a lot less than 74 more days to sell 2 million iPhones.

Cool find: iTunes Visualizer Cheat Sheet
One of our readers pointed me in the general direction of this page, which features more information than you ever wanted to know about the iTunes visualizer. the cheat sheet lists keyboard shortcuts for various commands, as well as all of the visualization forms, effects, and color schemes. The page notes that “There are 11475 form/effect combinations, and 734400 form/effect/color combinations. It would take over 1000 hours to try them all out! And of course you’ll want to try out your favorite ones with different types of music. And if you’re still bored, you can try to experiment with favorite transitions - which should keep you busy for the next 100000 years or so...”
Translation: the iTunes visualizer can do a whole heck of a lot!
Please note that the cheat sheet was written for iTunes 4, so some things may have changed since then. However, it’s a good starting point for learning about everything the iTunes visualizer can do. Check it out!
