Apple media event - oh what could it be?

As most everyone in the tech community knows by now, Apple will hold a media event at the Regent Street Apple Store in London tomorrow. The event has been publicized with the tagline “Mum’s no longer the word.” Ooo, Apple has a secret! Oh what could it be? Here’s a little bit of my speculation.

iPhone in Europe?

This is the leading prediction so far, considering the event will take place in Europe. Apple noted that the iPhone would be available in Europe late this year when it was announced in January. Now would be a good time to announce the iPhone’s European launch, as it would allow plenty of time before the holiday shopping season. On the other hand, AppleExpo starts in a mere eight days, but Apple hasn’t used AppleExpo for a product launch since 2004. Maybe AppleExpo will be used to announce a Leopard launch date?

Also, since the title of the press event is a play on “mum’s the word,” it may be possible that Apple is ready to announce a secret. Perhaps they’ll release some iPhone updates--maybe a 3G iPhone or one with a larger capacity?

Lastly, I’m going to venture a guess and say that if any iPhone announcements are made tomorrow, we will also hear more about the upcoming iPhone update for the iTunes WiFi Music Store.

Leopard?

It’s possible that an availability announcement could be made, but it may still be a little early. Leopard is due sometime next month, but in recent history, when Apple announces a release in a month, it seems to run late in the month (iPhone made its debut at the end of June; Tiger was released in late April 2005). My guess is we’ll hear more about Leopard either toward the end of this month or early next month with a late October release.

More iTunes UK content?

Macworld UK speculated that more iTunes UK content might be a possibility, or that an announcement regarding the Beatles on iTunes may be made. As far as iTunes content goes, I don’t think we’ll be seeing that. I would expect a press release, not a media event, for additional content. The Beatles suggestion is interesting, though. Additional video content on iTunes is not unprecedented; announcing the availability of the Beatles’ music library on iTunes, however, would be and may warrant a press conference.

Mac hardware updates?

Speed bumps are typically low-profile announcements, so I wouldn’t expect a media event for that. Major product updates may be worth a press event, but the rumor mill has been silent regarding new Macs. In short, I don’t expect new Macs.

Deep Thought will not be providing live updates for tomorrow’s event, since 10 AM London time is, well, 2 AM here, and I’m still asleep at that point, but we’ll try to have plenty to say about it after the fact.
