Cyan Worlds Inc Says Goodbye

Cyan Worlds Inc, who made the Myst line of games has laid off the majority of it’s staff, leaving just Rand Miller and Tony Fryman looking after the company. As it stands, Cyan Worlds will exist, but I guess Myst V really is the end of the series for Cyan Worlds.

Deep Thought salutes you for revolutionising gaming in the early 90s and for giving us one of the best game series ever.

thinkback

1.

Was Myst the best selling game for a while?  For how long?

2.

As well as popularizing the CD-ROM format.

3.

It is sad to see them go. I’ve never played any of their games, but I hear they were top notch.

4.

AKAIK, it was the best selling game (series?) until the Sims. I’d assume that it still stands at #2.

5.

Yeah, until the sims came out it was the best selling game series.

I’m just looking at this guinness book of records I’ve got from 1999 and it says that it had topped sales of 4 million by then (being the first CD rom game to sell over 2 million). It also said that at the time Riven was the second fastest selling game of all time (after FF VII) selling 1,003,414 copies in 6 months

6.

Wow that’s a lot.  But didn’t Halo 2 make like $250 million in a few days?  I know it made a ton.

7.

There’s a great 1994 Wired cover story, Guerrillas in the Myst, which gives some perspective on how Myst fit into its time. For example: “Myst is a phenomenon like no other in the world of CD-ROM. That’s not a remarkable statement; CD-ROM is too new to have already had many phenomena.” And: “...it is the first artifact of CD-ROM technology that suggests that a new art form might very well be plausible, a kind of puzzle box inside a novel inside a painting, only with music. Or something.”

8.

That’s a remarkable feature.  Thanks, Dan.

9.

Sims may have claimed the title as the best selling game series now, but it doesn’t really count.  There are 300% as many households in America now with computers as there when Myst was released.  If you correct Myst’s sales numbers for that I’m sure it still reigns as the best selling, per capita, game ever.
