The Death of the iPod
Not really, it just seems to be the topic du jour on the mac-hating sites. But ‘Ol Dvorak really pulled on out of his ass eh?

thinkback
Yup, I was thinking the same.
Wad this the article?

I have no doubt that OSX 86 will be modifiable to run on all X86s (I bet it’s just replacing parts of it with parts of Darwin) but it’ll probably be pretty screwed up since Apple only writes drivers for Macs. Also, Darwin probably WAS Apple’s attempt to get third parties to develop drivers for it’s system.
I think there’ll be a decline in iPod sales once everybody who wants one has one. There are stubborn people like me who won’t spend $300 on an external hard disk with a headphone port and a touchcircle.
I *still* don’t have an iPod… at some point, I may start saving for one. It would be good for school, hehe.
It’ll be very difficult to get OS X running on non-Apple hardware if they’re actually using TCPA, or a variation, as the rumors are starting to say.
Death of the HP iPod?
I did recently buy a Sony CD walkman with MP3 and atrac3plus (why? it says in the manual you can’t play it in the computer, and it won’t work on anything else.) capability. It only uses one AA battery (which is more than many people can spell).
Going the CD walkman with MP3 route is pretty cheap, CDs are less than a dollar a piece and you can fit about 13 CDs worth of audio on just one with MP3s.
It’s totally tits!

I doubt that’ll happen until the next thing comes along to replace it. Look at the sales of CD players, they were around 19 million last quarter. Nearly everyone I know has a CD player if not two or three including their DVD player, Car stereo, Discman etc.
Apple will just keep expanding the iPod line like Sony did with it’s CD Players. Soon their will be car decks with mp3 players in them (sony already sells one), DVD players with flash or hard drive mp3 players, etc.

Hmm… a car stereo where you could plug your ipod in and slip it into a slot, like a cassette… that would be cool!
Yep. I’m guessing that all mp3 players in the future will have some kind of common port on them that allows them to be plugged directly into certian car stereos. I though that was what Apple was going to do with Firewire on the iPod but they scrapped that idea.
Look at how the Xbox 360 and PS3 will handle USB drives and mp3 players. That’s how car stereos should function although it would be nice if you could just slip an iPod into a slot on the unit itself.
Hopefully Apple will create a car stereo.
It’s called ”iPod Your Car.” The route Apple is going for car integration is that the iPod sits in your glovebox (where theives can’t see it), and you control the music thrugh the steering wheel so you can keep your eyes on the road.
BMW/MINI, Mercedes, Volvo, and Scion already have models with the option. Honda/Acura, Audi, Volkswagen, Nissan, Infiniti, and Ferrari are coming soon, according to Apple.
