Headless?  Hardly.

I wish people would stop calling the rumored $500 computer “headless.” If Apple comes out with something like this, there will be nothing “headless” about it.

Want proof?  Look at the Cube:  A G4-based computer in a small form factor, which unfortunately sold for way too much to actually be viable.  Headless?  No.  Monitorless?  Yes.

Big deal.  Apple has been releasing computers for years that don’t have monitors.  That doesn’t make them all “headless.” I don’t see anybody talking about their “headless” Power Mac G5, or the new “headless” Xserve that Apple recently released.

So why will this rumored computer be “headless?” It won’t be, and it won’t be an iMac.  The iMac is a computer that contains everything in one machine… an all-in-one.  If Apple releases a $500 computer, it won’t be an iMac.  Period.  It doesn’t fall into the iMac family.  It will probably be called the Cube 2, or something else entirely.  But it’s not a “headless iMac” just because it doesn’t have a monitor, especially if it’s released with a G4.
