Intel Canning Lower-End Chipsets

Intel has started to “phase out” it’s lesser chipsets in favor of selling higher models, such as Pentium D, and the Centrino in laptops.  A spokesperson for Intel said they are not getting rid of low-end chipsets all together, “but said the company was in the middle of making changes to its manufacturing plants to make way for more mobile-focused and high-performance products.”

The reason for getting rid of the cheaper CPU’s is to make way for more chips that can run mutliple cores (Pentium D) and running multiple OS’s better (OS X AND Windows?)

This put the motherboard industy in a more compative state right now to get a head start on more boards that support higer-end chipsets.  The two main board makers, Silicon Integrated System and Via Technologies, have to fill the gap from now until October in the market with new boards, but fewer CPU’s.

thinkback

1.

More market for AMD to sell to, the best thing about it is that AMDs aren’t really low end, but just low cost.

2.

well, i guess this is a good thing if apple is switching to intel.. currently i don’t think that intels processors can handle making as quality chips that apple will expect, but if they are working on updating themselves that’s great. especially if they move to higher cache.

however, even though they are doing this (which i have a feeling its because of apple) they still won’t be able to compete with amd and its ability to put out higher quality processors at a lower price. which, i think apple should have went to.. oh you know another thing about that.. its really funny actually… remember the old powermac commercials and how they were so anti-intel? amazing isn’t it? grin
