Intel Macs coming early?

Intel, baby! And rumors! w00t!

Forbes is reporting that Intel-based Macs may be coming to the party early and could debut at Macworld San Francisco in January, starting with everyone’s favorite 6.5"x6.5"x2" box, the Mac mini.

The analyst said Apple would introduce more video content and digital entertainment offerings at Macworld in January, helping to drive shares. Checks also indicate that the company may be ready to launch lower-end Intel-based Macs earlier than its original June 2006 target, with the possibility of an Intel-based Mac Mini at Macworld.

Deep Thought’s Take: Considering how Steve Jobs and company apparently had their calendars off by a few months and have already released a crapload of new goods, it’s quite possible we’ll hear that silly Intel jingle at the end of Apple TV ads sooner than we thought--but knowing Steve, he’ll take over Intel’s marketing department, redesign the Intel Inside logo and make a new Intel jingle. But that’s just my hunch.

thinkback

1.

Actually, I still like the start-up sound that somebody did with the Mac “bong” followed by the Intel tone.

But I think the analyst may be off.  As I understand it, Intel will be volume-shipping Yonah’s in Q2, which starts in April.

2.

Also, moving the Mini first might make it more powerful or in someway better than the iMac.  Apple doesn’t want that because of the decreased revenue and profit margin that would result as the Mini ate into iMac sales.

I believe that’s the reason why Appel put Frontrow on the iMac instead of putting it on the Mini which would be the obvious choice for a HTPC.  Also note that the Mac Mini has barely been updated since it’s been released.  Considering that Apple has numerous processors and hard drives which they could put in the Mini but are choosing not to do so, one might think that they are trying to further distance the Mini from the iMac.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple got rid of the Mini altogether or let it lag even further behind iMacs as a way to increase iMac sales.  Supposedly the Mini is only selling about 100,000 per quarter anyway.  Any hope of the Mini luring switchers really hasn’t panned out so it’s mainly previous Mac owners that are buying them.

3.

I believe Apple will release their first Mactel when Intel releases the chip for it.  We are heading towards that Intel world where they announce a chip’s release and PC companies, like Dell and HP, release a computer with those chips that same day.  Just add Apple to the list.

If the dual core Yonah comes out first then the Macs destined for that dual core will be released first - probably the iMac, PB and, with luck) a mid level headless Mac, right between the Mac mini and PM.

The Mac mini and iBook would wait for the single core Yonah, which I understand will be around April.

WHile there may be strong arguments as to which line Apple SHOULD launch first I think it is all going to depend on Intel’s releases.
