Internet Explorer 7 beta available

Attention KMart sho--er, early adopters! Microsoft has released a public beta of Internet Explorer 7, a major update to the world’s most popular browser. IE 7 adds tabs, a streamlined UI, RSS reader capabilities, a web search box (yes, you can change which web search engine it uses), improved security, and more. Oh, and they updated the icon too! Microsoft’s site has more information, a tour, and download link.

Deep Thought will have an IE 7 Beta review in the near future.

Deep Thought’s take: Welcome to 2006, Internet Explorer. We’re glad you could make it. I only hope IE 7 has better standards compliance; it’ll make a web developer’s life much easier.

thinkback

1.

Good News: IE already has support for some standards. The only one I can think of right now is support for transparent PNGs.

2.

IE 6’s CSS support is a little shaky, its box model in particular.

3.

Ditto. I’m just another web developer who hopes that IE 7 actually supports web standards this time around. Fix the CSS and the PNG, please! And while you’re at it, get rid of the M$-only extensions like marquee.

4.

CSS support in IE6 is a joke (but what do you expect for a product that hasn’t had any feature improvements in 6yrs). Hopefully they go all the way with CSS1-2 support in IE7 and maybe a little CSS3 as well, anything less is a joke. Microsoft has held up the full development of the web long enough, they need to get up to speed or get out of the way.

5.

I still use IE (version 6) and I have no problem with it.

It loads faster than Firefox especially off-line.

Only reason why I am using FF is because I like the tabs and bookmark features.

All this complaint about IE not meeting whatever standards.  Well, it wasn’t a problem when Netscape was still around.

6.

I take it you’re not a web designer, Informer.

7.

I wonder if it’s any more secure than IE 6?  That the big question.  One can have tabs and PNGs and women waiving feathers above your head to keep you cool, but so long as it has the security of a three year old holding a wiffle-ball bat, it’ll remain completely substandard to most other browsers on the market.

8.

I’ve definately noticed higher security.

Where security will get very tight is when IE 7 is out for Vista, with Least Privilege Mode.

9.

I installed it and then uninstalled it because it stalled the whole system after three minutes every time I tried using it.

Did’ya file a bug report?

I am and I also use CSS. In fact I basically rewrote the way my forums work so I think I’m in the advanced stage.  Are you?

I can also tell you that only 1.3% of my users are using Macintosh while visiting my website (and its not even computer or OS related).

12.

What the hell is happening to your site????

Why are our posts posted as quotes?

13.

The newsgroup doesn’t work for me and it’s kinda hard to use windows’ automatic report filing when the only thing the computer will respond to is a cold boot.

14.

Why are our posts posted as quotes?

the hell?  wtf

15.

Fixed. Someone mangled a quote tag, causing the page to be rendered incorrectly.

And yes, I have a bit of experience with XHTML and CSS.

What’s your site about?

16.

What’s the URL?

17.

Informer, what’s the URL to your site?

18.

Yeah, inquiring minds want to know. What’s your URL?

19.

Anyone have a screenshot of IE7 in action or a link?

20.

This is a start.  You can see the search toolbar on the right, now a standard feature on 90% of browsers if IE7 is adapted.  At least it’s a design standard that’s very popular.  Very.

Check out the home site too, if I may post again and add.  The site’s motto is “watching Microsoft like a hawk”

23.

Thanks Liam.  You also finally got the RSS thing to work on my computer with the proper URL now.  IE7 is disappointing.  Visually and probably design wise.  I want something fresh.

24.

Unfortunately, fresh will have to wait until IE 8, as IE 7 is catch-up more than anything (I like it a lot, though).
