And to create an iTunes Store account, you need to either give Apple your credit card number or purchase one of those iTunes Gift Cards.
Up to this date not even Microsoft has dared to pull off something like this.
wow, that’s rough. requiring someone to register their iPod, especially considering the increased chances of recovery if your iPod is stolen (i should know, i got mine back), is just plain obnoxious.
has anyone tried not signing up for an itunes account rather than just reading something? i suppose if you want itunes wi-fi to work in the first place (a selling point of the ipod touch) you’d need an account . . .
Good work, Steve. That guarantees that I don’t have to save for a new iPod Touch.

I have no idea. However, keep in mind that this is coming from a document from Apple itself. (FWIW, I already have an iTunes account, and I typically register my Apple products.)
And good point regarding registration.
Yeh, I’m sure nobody has an account with iTunes, so this is a major inconvenience. Enabling the account probably alerts all intelligence agencies and automatically allows a phone tap and computer snooping.
According to the review over at Apple Insider you can skip the registration. Are we really writing an article about this without actually finding out if it’s true?
But what I lose if I can’t create the iTunes account ?
There are functionalities to which I will not be able to accede?
Rubbish. The writer is badly mistaken… and his error is compounded by the fact that a number of sad sites have chosen to quote this rubbish. The iTunes set-up step can be skipped. It’s not unlike setting up a new Mac when you are asked about setting up a dotmac account.

Hmm…
I’ve just seen the AppleInsider artice, and I’ve emailed the author for verification.
