iTunes 4.8. Plays Movies. God help us
However this is the biggest of sign to date of Apple becoming the Microsoft of music.
iTunes 4.8 is out and it’s big new feature is that it can play Movies. There are plenty of people who seem to love this feature and are praising Apple to high heaven for it. However this is the biggest of sign to date of Apple becoming the Microsoft of music. Word started out as a nice little app. Then it got popular. People wanted more features and Microsoft were happy to oblige and add them. But then they got into full swing and when people thought it was fine Microsoft decided to carry on. It’s now the most bloated app I can think of.
Apple has done a good job with iTunes and around 4.5 it was at it’s height. But unfortunately since then it’s started going down hill slightly with features that aren’t essentially needed. This latest feature is a very, very dangerous sign of things to come if Apple doesn’t realise what may happen. If they want to make an app that manages movies then make a separate app. They are Apple, for years they have realised that it is better to have lots of small apps that do their jobs well and integrate rather than one big app that does everything but none of them very good. I hope that Mr Jobs realises that this is a mistake before he ruins a perfectly good application.

Well it already seemed to be like MS with how hard it was to uninstall and the stupid iPod service which was impossible to permenantly shut off. If I still used iTunes (which I don’t because of the aforementioned reasons, despite the fact that I live on campus) I would hope that it doesn’t hijack my file associations, I like having music playing in the background while I watch videos.
