Mac IE dead at last
Microsoft has announced today that the Mac version of Internet Explorer is really dead. Yeah, really. Not only will there be no further maintenance updates (though Microsoft killed those in 2003!), but soon Internet Explorer 5.2 of Mac OS will no longer be available for download.
In June 2003, the Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit announced that Internet Explorer for Mac would undergo no further development, and support would cease in 2005. In accordance with published support lifecycle policies, Microsoft will end support for Internet Explorer for Mac on December 31st, 2005, and will provide no further security or performance updates.
Additionally, as of January 31st, 2006, Internet Explorer for the Mac will no longer be available for download from Mactopia. It is recommended that Macintosh users migrate to more recent web browsing technologies such as Apple’s Safari.
Funeral services for Internet Explorer are not expected because, let’s face it, almost nobody uses it anymore anyway. In fact, I wouldn’t be too surprised if throngs of Mac users gather in celebration!
But if you have any fond (or not-so-fond) IE memories, feel free to post a comment.

But, they killed it the moment Safari came out…
I seriously don’t understand how this is news…
So they shot it in the head then, what? Hid the body in the basement for 3 years???
This is more a PR event than anything. It’s M$ announcement to Apple that “this is just the beginning of things we’re going to do if you cross us.” Yeah, we all know IE’s been dead for years, but that doesn’t stop the PR folks from making this work for them.
So it’s wrong for a company to notify peple that something’s support has ended?
Uh, no - they already did that with Safari 1.0 (or whateveritwas).
curse not being able to edit own posts!
I meant they already did that when Safari 1.0 came out (or whateveritwas).

1.
I feel bad, because we use it all the time, in both OS 9 and OS X. I still prefer IE to Safari because it can get into sites (like .mac) that give Safari trouble,
But we’ve been having more and more trouble with it, so I guess that’s the way it goes.
