My MacBook is a CrackedBook
Has anyone else here had some strange, inexplicable cracking of the palmrest on their MacBook? A crack hs been developing on the right-hand side of my palmrest, right above the remote infrared receiver. I haven’t dropped it or banged it up in that corner. Here’s what it looked like when the crack was still young:
Look closely and you’ll be able to see a small line on the light gray portion of the palmrest.
The crack has since gotten worse. A lot worse:

I’ve used a little tape to keep it from getting worse.
Apparently I am not alone. As one poster in a forum thread mentions, it may be caused by the magnetic latches, judging by the crack’s location. According to users in the two threads I linked to, Apple is repairing the problem for some, but not for others. Either way, I hope to be able to get the palmrests replaced on this thing, since it suffers from discoloration, and Apple has acknowledged the discoloration as a known issue with some Core Duo MacBooks. In the future, I may have to use a foam keyboard cover to alleviate some of the pressure on the plastic to prevent this from happening again. I have one for my iBook somewhere, I’ll just have to use it with my MacBook.
It looks like I’ll be getting in touch with Apple in the next couple days and see if they can do anything.
Are you having this problem? Have you contacted Apple? If so, what was the result?

thinkback
Just happened with mine, a crack where the latch meets the palm rest on the right side. Mine actually split in the middle of the crack so each side of the piece is held down only on one end.
I have the EXACT same problem. I’ll get in touch with Apple about this—but I can’t afford to give up my computer for weeks.
Ugh, the same just happened to mine!
I have the exact same problem. It’s particularly bad to the right of the track pad, but it’s also starting to develop on the left.
was there any resolution to this? I just had this problem happen to me last night and I noticed it this morning.
I keep hearing that it is on the right hand side, I know there seems to be the occasional wanderer of crack, but mine is exactly where most everyone had been mentioning.
whats the deal?
did apple take care of it?
am I going to have to pay for an obvious flaw?
Me too. I thought it was something careless I did until i noticed a fine crack on the left-hand side beginning to form today. This is crazy and, frankly, sort of lame that after 3 months this is happening. And the last thing I want to do is go wait at the apple store for an hour tomorrow. Booo!
Yeah, I went to the apple store and they said it was ‘normal wear and tear’ .... so it ill not be covered by the warranty!!!!
They said they MIGHT be able to replace the whole top keyboard if it is ‘stained from dirt on my hands’, because that is a ‘known’ issue that they are fixing. BUT, he said mine didn’t look stained enough to fix because of that.
Has ANYONE had the apple store agree to fix the top because of the crack along the edge? I would love to find someone who has had apple admit it shouldn’t have happened after 3 months. It infuriates me that they say it’s my fault and caused by normal wear and tear.
Help!! :-(
My macbook has chipped on the right side of the mouse pad. at first it was just cracked and eventually a small piece of the plastic came off. the guy at the apple store told me its caused my wear and tear, and its not covered under warranty. should i call apple care insteaD?
Update (Sorry for the long wait!!):
I got my palmrest replaced because it was discolored, but not necessarily because it was cracked. I bought some Wildeepz from Radtech to alleviate the pressure applied by the latches:

Let’s hope it works out!

I would call Apple; be persistent!
I just took a look on my MacBook and what do I see, CRACKS!!!
Apple will get a Email from me!
FWIW, Mine is cracked again.
I tried using a little glue to hold it together; so far so good.
My MacBook is 6 months new, and has cracked TWICE, and been repaired (under warranty) TWICE! What a PITA. I’ve got wildeepz on order, on their way, so hopefully that will prevent further cracking. It is RIGHT underneath where the little ridges on the display bezel contact the palm rest, both left and right (although the right side has cracked first, both times).

1.
I had exactly the same problem on both sides of my trackpad - in exactly the same area as you have shown in your photos.
After whizzing an email to Apple - my top keyboard/palmrest area was replaced within a matter of weeks ...
My thoughts are that this is a design flaw caused by the snapping shut of the laptop on the thin plastic of the top keyboard/palm rest area. If you look carefully you’ll notice that the cracks occur exactly where the stress is placed by the two raised plastic pieces on your LCD bezel.
Your photos correspond EXACTLY with the problem I had, and I think a lot of people will be encountering this problem.
I feel it is only a matter of time before my new top assembly exhibits the same problems as the old one due to the inherent design flaw.
It should be fixed under warranty.
