New Stuff, But I’m Still Unimpressed…Why?
Ubuntu forever. No rumor sites, no games, no bullshit reality distortion fields that disappoint you later on.
From a guy who bought an iSight originally and downloaded movies onto his computer along with a 300 disc album full of anime and another one full of sci-fi, i’m not impressed with the new, thinner, more multimedia iMacs---or iPods even though they come with a simple remote.
Hell, I don’ t think I’m in love with Apple any more. We broke up and it’s as simple as that. The logo on my laptop is covered and I’m just enjoying the power and freedom of Ubuntu right now.
WHy switch to Ubuntu? It supports Apple wireless keyboards apparently because I’m using one as well as the Mighty Mouse, PowerBook, iMac, PowerMac G5, etc. It just works. Nothing unix-y. You can do software updates like on a Mac except you don’t need to restart. It’s not as shiny or fancy but it does have themes and customizations just like a Mac.
I really don’t care how it compares to a Mac but more about that is 100% free forever as they say themselves at Ubuntu. Ubuntu means “humanity to others” in an African tongue and it is about love and sharing, not products and selling.
Ubuntu forever. No rumor sites, no games, no bullshit reality distortion fields that disappoint you later on. Now if only I could remove the Apple logo from my KB and Mighty Mouse. I want a computer, not an advertisement.
That being said, who wouldn’t want a new iMac if it does what it does and does it simply? Just run Ubuntu, and don’t count on AirPort working like SogniX says...it won’t---not for a while. Hopefully soon. There’s no Linux driver for the Broadcom chipset it uses. Damn you.
If only I can get more hotkeys working like the volume up and down on my wireless kb. It’ll be a challenge to get this working using the Keyboard Shortcuts panel but I’ll figure it out soon. I already got the eject button on the powerbook itself working. The volume up and down and screen brightness take up F1-F5 normally so I don’t want them to interfere with those buttons, but who uses them anyway? I should probably just set the buttons to do volume up and all.
Anyway, enough technical support. I gotta browse more pics of the iMac’s thinner enclosure and find a screenshot of Photo Booth so I can see it myself. It sounds cool.

thinkback
Little hands people have the Nano. People like me need a big wide iPod that doesn’t make them feel like they’re using a pencil.
I think the new iMac is kick-ass, but it seems to me that Apple is just catching up to Microsoft. No tv-tuner though, that sucks ass, I would gladly trade the iSight for a tuner to give it some DVR functionality.
Ugh, TV.

funny stuff
As far as the iMac’s DVR lacking, I want to make a MythTV box with two tuners. But still, why not, ideally, download shows in 100% digital quality with no commercials and 100% correct metadata. That’s worth something, if not free.
It’s a strange day when David Letterman and Paul Schaffer openly debate the proper name of the newly-announced iPod model as part of their Late Show routine.
Yeah, what’s the deal? They can’t call it the iPod Video?
Why would they want to? They spent all day trying to emphasize that it is an iPod with added video functionality.
I guess that’s true, but I know people are going to use that as a criteria to classify it besides just “5G” or whatever.
And also, all the promotion and advertising for it is emphasizing the video part of it, so why not?
I have no doubt people will refer to it that way, probably calling it a video iPod would be my guess. But since Apple is only offering one main version of the iPod, they don’t want to officially call it that and confuse people.
“No, I don’t care about the video thing, I just want a regular iPod.” That’s exactly what Apple doesn’t want to happen.
I think when they rolled the iPod Photo back into the regular iPod line, it marked the last we will see of something like that.
Ubuntu is good for one thing. Playing Freecell without windows.

uh… if you don’t like apple any more, _why_ are you writing about it and not something you do like?
Because this is the post proclaiming that he doesn’t like Apple anymore.
Come on. You seriously think Ubuntu is better than OS X? You can be against consumerism all you want, but at the end of the day, OS X’s UNIX, widespread interoperability, ease of use, and good looks makes for a better OS. Don’t deny it.

Opinions are a tricky thing.

Ask SogniX why he prefers Ubuntu to OS X in many cases…
Yeah, well, SogniX is a sysadmin. He needs things from his OS which are not what I need from mine. For instance, typography and photography are my priorities. Tell me how Ubuntu can help me there.
I don’t see how the relatively lame unix functions in OS X are better than the linux in Unbuntu. Using the unix stuff in OS X is often a chore for anything more than typing into the terminal. Ubuntu is Linux through and through.
Depends what you need, Kuaidang.

1.
I think the updated iMac is an outstanding computer and I’d jump at the chance to get one if I had the money to spare. The iPod seems a little too wide, however; I could see where people with smaller hands wouldn’t appreciate the new form factor. But I guess you can’t please everyone all the time.
