IBM today announced the PPC 970MP officially ñ The chip is everything the rumor mongers expected.  It contains two completely separate PPC 970 cores with a high speed interconnect between them.  Each core has a 1MB level 2 cache (upped from the 970FX’s single 512K cache), and the chip is said to be debuting at 3Ghz.  Some sites have speculated that with no major change in chip technology the chip could run very hot, and hence require more machines with water cooling.  However there is also some speculation that there will be a single core 970GX chip release at the same time which will have implemented some manufacturing changes and brought the core temperature down at higher clock speeds.
