Rumor Roundup: iTunes for Windows Mobile; New Mac minis?

A blog is reporting that iTunes 5 is coming soon to Windows Mobile. The blog entry also features photographs of iTunes running on a PocketPC device...Rumors surfaced last week that the Mac mini would receive a quiet upgrade sometime this week. Well, the new Mac mini rollout was, uh, probably a little too quiet. In fact, it was so quiet that Apple forgot to let the marketing staff know about the update. According to MacRumors, the new Mac minis are now shipping in old Mac mini boxes. Think Secret is reporting the same.

Weird.

1.

That’s one way to clear your inventory before announcing an update.

There’s a precedent, actually.  I remember reports, including from AnandTech, that a random number of the first Mac minis had 5400 RPM hard drives instead of the advertised 4200 RPM drives.

2.

I wonder if Apple crippled the 5400 rpm drives to 4200 rpm like they do with other hardware on low-end machines?  Of course they probably didn’t, right?

3.

Also, kudos on doing a rumor roundup, Nick.  That Windows Mobile software could make a big impact, if something similar comes to fruition.

In an article called “Five Meta-Trends Changing the World” by David Pearce Snyder that appeared in “Annaul Editions”, regarding Universal Connectivity, “By 2010, all long-distance phone calls, plus a third of all local calls, will be made via the Internet while 80% to 90% of all Internet access will be made from Web-enabled phones, PDAs, and wireless laptops.” Thoughts?

The same article also mentions that iChat-AV-like software will be widely available in another three years, which I think refers to 2008.

Bryan, no, they didn’t.  It’s a laptop hard drive, so 4200 RPM is normal.
