SonyBMG apologizes for DRM brouhaha

In an attempt to remove the egg on their faces, SonyBMG has eaten a slice of humble pie (mmm) and posted an apology to customers for any trouble the XPC DRM software used on some music CDs has caused. Several issues have risen over the use of this particular DRM scheme, ranging from security issues to privacy to whether or not the buyer actually owns the music they purchased.

The SonyBMG apology release closes with the following: “Ultimately, the experience of consumers is our primary concern, and our goal is to help bring our artists’ music to as broad an audience as possible.  Going forward, we will continue to identify new ways to meet demands for flexibility in how you and other consumers listen to music.”

An FAQ has also been posted online.

Deep Thought’s take: Sony, I hope you learned your lesson. Don’t do it again!

1.

And I hope this has been a valueble lesson to any company researching DRM technologies in the same vein as XPC.

2.

The ultimate irony is that the only people Sony SCREWED over were people who actually paid for the CD!

It’s one thing to malware online files or send out those blank files over p2p but to purposely thrash computers from the actual customers who paid money for your products?

Sony, good luck selling Vaio computers this year! Or big screen TV’s this holiday season ... Or PS3 next year ...

3.

Haha, a lot of Sony bashers.

Anyway, enough of the Sony hoopla, how about discussing the build quality of the Nano?

Vote as the worst and most recalled ipod in history.

Many unhappy people!

4.

Well its likely that both Sony and First4Internet violated a number of laws in many countries.  Lets see if governments will enforce those laws agains a large corporation or if they are only to be used against individuals such as spammers etc.

I think an apology is not enough.  Sony should pay, if necessary executives should go to jail as spammers or spyware authors would.  Certainly if First4Internet incorporated GPL code, then that should be tested in court.

5.

There were many “boycott sony” posters on campus yesterday.  This can’t be good for them with the holiday buying season coming up.

6.

Only one out of 1000 nanos had screen that broke because of a manufacturing defect. And it only affected the first batch. It’s a typical fail-rate for any consumer electronic company.

As for the screen scratching, the thing is getting blown out of proportion. I don’t even use a case, and use it everyday since a month, and the screen is perfectly readable. There are some very minor scratches here and there, and they are overall very superficial. Nothing more than what you could expect from a shiny transparent plastic surface like a screen. With a $4 can of Brasso, these scratches will go away.

If you use a screen protector and a case, which can be bought for $20, you can maximize the protection, and if the case gets scratched or used, you can just buy another.

7.

Informer, how about we keep on the topic of the “Sony hoopla” instead of sidetracking to simply bash another unrelated product?

8.

Did this do anything to Macs, or only Windows?
