Summary of Computers this week in my life

1) I was at home for two days and had to use a Dell.  It’s less than two years old but it’s already doing something quite odd.  It’s acting sluggish.  [I have no idea why this is indented btw]
2) The dell is ugly.  My iMac is not.  They both have ugly logos though but the Dell’s is more noticable---grey on Black.
3) The dell hasn’t been noisy so far and no matter how much it was originally worth (it’s a basic model), it’s expendable.  So that’s two things.  It’s good for now but if it acts up more we can ignore it or trash it perhaps violently for fun.  Destruction can be that way.  I wish I had destroyed my PowerBook at the first sign of its noise problem (but after AppleCare failed to fix it).  I’d give it at least a chance.  What technology have you destroyed?  I certainly have broken a few things...the ones on purpose were [dead] cell phones.

Years ago I took one to the curb and then smashed it over and over again.  This time for science---I couldn’t open the case even with my special tools.  Curiosity.  Then there’s that video of the guy, a fat guy, smashing an office computer at his cubicle.  And surely one or a hundred of PC’s being tossed out windows.  People hate technology sometimes.  It’s stress relief and can be appropriate and effective at that.  It’s a thing not a person.  As a vegetarian I’d never hurt an animal because it has real feelings but if attacked me, definitely.  The thing about computers and our gadgets is they are dumb...unless I’m wrong.  The Mac is alive?  Short Circuit’s Johnny 5 was definitely a real person.  It even got NYC/NY citizenship.  I’d never hurt my friend Johnny 5.  On the same note would the little toy versions of him be fair game?  No.  They showed independent thought and personality and even if it was programmed I just love the little things too much.  I want to buy one!
4) I’m really glad to be back at my Mac.  No virus will affect me either.  I am all about backup plans.  Unplug the computer from the Net.  Use Linux via LiveCD (on X86?).  Go without a computer.  Use public computers.  Encrypt everything.  Hire a professional adminstrator to secure permissions.  Wait for patches while staying offline, just like unplugging it except not as permanent.  Whatever.
5) I haven’t used an iPod in two days and I miss the convenience.  I still hate the size of the old 30gb Photo.  Too thick to be invisible in the pocket like the shuffle.  The shuffle is the future.  Or something that’s just a remote and VoiceOver.  I mean a corded remote.  But I don’t want headphones ideally.  Something like a personal speaker.
6) Intel Apps are still lagging behind.  Does the virus affect intel machines?  Probably.  But real important things are still behind.  I’m not a power user so much as an early adapter.  But I can’t be a power user now because Sogudi and some cool stuff is not being ported as quickly as I’d like as in immediately.  The other thing is about Dvorak…
7) Dvorak thinks Windows is Apple’s destination like Pilky read.  We all read it probably.  It’s a bold statement but I commented all is possible.  If it’s strategic it’ll be even more likely.  Just like smashing some toys up as a game is a way to have fun and concentrate on more important things---not on half-working, frustrating, poorly designed junk.  That stuff can really waste your time.  Throw it out, write a blog about its suckiness, whatever you do don’t waste time on it.  Windows is one of those things.

thinkback

1.

I permanently took apart an old IBM PS/2 1MHZ 286 junker, it was showing signs of being really screwed up, I wish it didn’t break down though, there were a lot of memories in that machine, I don’t think many were good, but they were still important, now they’re gone forever.  I guess to a geek their computer is something more than just a toaster.
