Visual Studio 2005 Express Now Free Forever

Earlier today, Microsoft announced that its Visual Studio Express line of software development IDEs would remain free for the life of the product. This is in contrast to their original plan, which was to give them out free until November 2006, then charge US$49 for them. In the announcement, Microsoft cited over 5 million downloads of the VB Express products since November 2005.

Visual Studio Express is Microsoft’s line of IDEs aimed at the hobbyist and student. Visual Studio 2005 is the first version of Visual Studio to come in Express editions.

life of the product == time ‘til competing developer packages for other OS’s are no longer a threat

It looks like MS may have added some good feature compared to VB6, but they’ve also complicated the language.

4.

I made my first VB 2005 app without really learning any of the language.  It’s a timer that counts seconds, minutes, hours since execution, so long as it doesn’t run for 24 hours.

Hehe, so in VB you can do timers without learning any code and in cocoa you can do word processors and web browsers raspberry

Well, you could do those in VB6, but I guess they removed those projects in VB 2005.
