What happened to SpyMac?

Web 2.0 happened to it, obviously. Or rather, the abuse of Web 2.0.

Web 2.0 happened to it, obviously. Or rather, the abuse of Web 2.0.

Okay, I almost never visit SpyMac; about the only time I do is when another site links to it. Recently it was The Unofficial Apple Weblog. It’s been a while since I visited SpyMac last, so when I saw what has happened to the site, I was in shock. Like, claw-my-eyes-out-of-my-head shock. Like, I-want-to-pay-a-visit-to-the-webmaster-and-kick-him-in-the-nuts shock.

So what is the new SpyMac? Well, take one part Myspace, one part YouTube, one part Flickr (minus the great layout and attractive design) and one part internet buzzwords. Mix them together until creamy. Pour into a baking dish and bake until smoldering. Imagine every social networking site and every content sharing site in existence merged into one incoherent mess of user-supplied content. On top of that, the “Mac” in their name seems to be just for show, as relatively little on the site seems to relate to the Mac at all, much less Apple. For some reason, Their old content-driven site is still operating, for the time being at least; SpyMac notes that “Classic is what we’re calling the bits and pieces of the site that haven’t been re-coded yet for Leapfrog.” I wonder how on Earth they could possibly integrate their old news-based paradigm into their new Web 2.0 site.

SpyMac calls their new site ”Leapfrog," which they describe as “Spymac’s vision of how the Internet’s content should be viewed and explored.” They also note that “it leapfrogs [oh, so clever!] Spymac into the forefront of next generation web services.” If this is the way of the future, I want no part of it.

Update 24 Feb 2010: Spymac.com has apparently shut down.

thinkback

1.

Wow. I was wondering how bad it could be. You were very nice to them. It’s much, much worse.

2.

If you rearrange the word SpyMac, you get MySpac.  Add an ‘e’ to the end, and…

3.

@Arden: Facebook?

4.

Yak!!  And the winner of this decade’s most horrid websites is....  (suspense) SplatMac!  ehm..  SpyMac!

I still remember how amazed I was when I discovered the site changed to reflect the time of the day.  Really impressive design thrown away.

5.

Well, ours changes to reflect the time of the year… you should stick around, see if you can get comfortable. wink

6.

Thanks for the review from an “outsiders” perspective. We long time spymaccers have put up with so much for so long that it’s amazing that any of us are still around. And yeah, “LeapFrog” has nothing to do with Macs, is butt-ugly, and represents yet another self-inflicted wound in their perpetual chase to become as big as the big guys.

We have had a long-runningthread here, tracking the changes and support (or lack thereof) at Spymac since early last April, in which nearly two dozen members have contributed.

Version 3 worked, then they began reducing functionality. They replaced that with V4, which didn’t work! The free email also was a travesty for some. Our conversation begins when they took the site down, without warning, prior to the introduction of Version V, the remnants of which are now known as “classic”. What was once a lively, active community has now been reduced to a mish-mashed Web 2.0 Flash site.

Again, thanks for your opinion especially since they can’t say that you are some “old, vocal” disgruntled member.

I’ll be linking to this page,

Rich

If you think it was bad then you should see it now. 10 Gs for the top spammer. You heard me right! Talent contest? ooooops Somewhere something got lost. Must be of been all them bugs the LeapFrog et!

You ain’t nothing until Spymac makes you a SpamAlot STAR. Things can only go up from here!!!!!

8.

Wow. It got worse. I didn’t think that was possible. wtf

9.

What? Where? How? Who?

10.

Wait wait it can and has gotten worse. The top spammer who everyone thought had #1 10 grand .... lost it in the last minute. HOW you ask? Someone bought over 600 dollars of Spymac virtual roses and teddies and came from the sexy lady in the bathtub comes from the lower position to claim stardom! WOW No talent, no hard work all ya need are them magical BLING bling teddies and roses. SPYMAC is such a winner these days. Moooooooola TO WIN BIG! With 10 grand she is sure to stay up there to win and win and win. OH YEAH what a contest!

Better yet this month pushes the envelope. Young girls fill the top positions today spamming porn sites. Side by side babies and adult hot sexy girlie media on front pages...oh let’s not forget the horny men who stop by to view Spymac/Leapfrog specialties. WHATaCOMBO. Yes it gets worse and only SM/LF can bring it with such flavor. You should read the http://www.classic.spymac.com forums under Spymac and Leapfrog. The threads “Ratings” Cashing out” and “Creative Suggestions For Contests” pretty much tells where Spymac ptb’s heads aer at. It’s so sad it’s funny. A wonderous study of how man can justify anything when it comes to greed.

The forum link I wrote above doesn’t work.
Try this one...if you are interested.

hmmmmmmm maybe they changed it to make it harder to get to. So much negative info is coming out to make SM look like ummmmmmm ....well you fill in the blanks.
I don’t know. I am not a geek but an artist. Hope this helps. Maybe someone else knows why the link didn’t work.

Good grief Spymac even has denied responsibility for this ad that shows up on European family pages filter on or off. HERE IS THE AD.

The tranlation from the advertising/sponsor="Horny webcam whores live behind the webcam not the cheapest is the hottest” Spymac says: ClicK the above to help our sponsors.

13.

The link didn’t work because the subdomain is classic, not www . classic.  (Had to add the spaces so it wouldn’t turn into a link.)

14.

OK many thanks… you are so right. My mistake.

15.

I just visited SpyMac today after over a year of absence, and if it wasn’t for the logo I would’ve thought I was visiting another site entirely. It’s a shame that something as aspiring as SpyMac would turn out like this.
