What’s wrong with the Mac part 1
As with any controversial article, please send a link over at MacBytes.com or your favorite news sites, because we like crazy posters from nowhere coming to spam comment us. Now onto the article. What’s up with Apple and what do they have to do to be amazing?
1) Correct the idea that developers are “sharecroppers” a la the SlashDot.org article [below]. You see, too often Apple or Microsoft or for that matter any company that “owns the land” aka the OS will take over a market that a 3rd party had pioneered. No big deal, IMO, but still I’d rather not develop for a platform, all things being equal, where the landlord can put me out of business on a whim. That’s what happened to the predecessor to iTunes which Apple bought under a lot of pressure tactics. So I hear. Either way, it’s a fact that they have the home team advantage because they have inside knowledge about the OS and can implant features into the next version if they like. Just go completely open-source already. Seriously.
2) There is no 2.
Besides, my PowerBook is so hot and noisy right now that I can’t focus for the life of me. It’s like a wind tunnel with a buzzsaw next to my ear. If you have the same problem, feel free to also post down there and show the world I’m not alone. Either way, the problem is real and a week of Apple Store doing tests still hasn’t shown them it. It’s amazing how I boot up and plug in my External FireWire disk drive and that causes the problem. Then it goes away as I unplug it and do less intense work.
Then now just in the middle of blogging with 3 tabs open and nothing else, it’s back again. Mr. Patrick Ekstrand said to talk to him tomorrow so I will. He’s the Corporate Executive Relations man. I hope he is THE man.
Besides, I’m dying to erase my HD and put Ubuntu on here already or on whatever machine I’ll be using.
9:48 EST update: was browsing Kayne West on iTMS, which I had previously hid from iTunes, and the fan goes on. Yay.

p.s. How do you partition a Mac? Newbie question, yes. But hey, whatever. I need to partition my drive so I have 20 gigs for Linux and 20 for Mac or whatever. Disk Utility gives me trouble. Specifically, when I select my HD (now called Hot Cakes in honor of the temperature of ye olde powerbook), and then I select “2 partitions” nothing else is lighted up. I can’t do anything at that point. I’ll just call AppleCare tomorrow or something. I’m in the mood for a long wait. Right. But this should be working!
11:34 OK It looks like you can’t resize a live partition. I’ll have to wait or pay $35 for iPartition.

Fixed. I’m working on writing off the top of my head with little proofing.
Tim Bray is wrong. An independent developer on a Free Software platform is just as likely to be superseded by the wares of bigger players as is a developer on a proprietary platform. Your choice in operating system or database management system is not going to protect you from competition.
Yes, not from competition. Survival of the fittest. But let’s look at equal chances to compete---in the open-source world you know what your “opponents” who are really your friends know. Equal opportunity.

Uh… why is there a backslash in this article’s title?
