Will Apple Adopt Windows? Not even when hell freezes over!
You know, sometimes I wonder if Dvorak's brain disconnects from his hands when he's typing
Ahhh, the venerable John C. Dvorak strikes again with his infamous lack of understanding for all things Apple. Though for once he isn’t declaring Apple’s impending doom, which makes a welcome change. This time he is in fact saying that Apple will be dropping OS X in favour of Windows.
First off, let’s discuss the fundamental flaw in the argument. Dvorak is saying that Apple will ship more Macs by taking away what makes a Mac a Mac and replacing it with the main reason that people buy a Mac over any other computer. Apple isn’t going to just dump the biggest weapon in it’s arsenal. It’s one thing to switch from Classic to OS X or from PPC to x86. It’s another thing completely to switch from the Mac OS to Windows. Not only would you have the major problem of viruses, spyware, trojans etc but you would also cut out software developers. Sure the bigger companies already have Windows apps out there but the majority of the smaller indie application developers rely on OSX and it’s technologies to make their apps so great. For many things there are no alternatives on windows. Plus Apple would effectively be abandoning all of it’s software. No iLife, no Safari, no Final Cut Studio. The only Apple apps that would be available would be iTunes and Quicktime, both of which don’t run as well on Windows as they do on the Mac.
Dvorak then goes on to say that Windows works with so many more devices than the Mac and so it makes sense to switch to Windows to make Macs work with more peripherals. I have a USB pen drive. I plug it into my Mac and it pops up on my desktop for me to use. I plug it into a Windows PC and it comes up saying that it has “Detected New Hardware”. Why it feels the need to tell me this every time I fail to see but it isn’t a good sign. Things get better when you move onto bigger peripherals such as printers. The Mac ships will hundreds of printer drivers pre-installed. Because of this you can simply plug in your printer and get printing, instead of having to find the Windows CDs or search the internet for the drivers needed and then hoping that they work and don’t crash your system.
And then he brings out the big finale. How will Apple convince the millions of Mac users to change over to the “enemy”. Well, he claims that Apple will use the same tool that it did with the Intel switch. Steve Jobs. The same Steve Jobs that manages to make anything seem possible, the same Steve Jobs that can make any big decision seem minor… the same Steve Jobs that has said over and over again ever since he started in the computer business that he feels the way to make the best products that Just Work™ is to control the whole system.

You know, sometimes I wonder if you’ll ever stop being a jackass.
You know, sometimes I wonder if you’ll ever finished your education.
Maybe you should get some more education?
Okay, what the hell is Dvorak smoking? Yes, Apple is a hardware company, but their hardware is still designed with their operating system in mind, even if the components are mostly industry standard.
OS X is Jobs’ baby, whereas Jobs seems to not have had any real attachment to the PowerPC. But OS X is very much Jobs’ baby. It’s also one of Apple’s biggest strengths. There’s no way Apple’s letting it go.
Anything is indeed possible.

That seems a bit hypocritical. An educated person would attack the post, not the poster. By attacking me directly you kinda put yourself down at the same time
Who cares if he is educated. A point is a point.
Typing error, my bad.
This guy and a couple of others don’t like it when they are criticised, but look at what they are doing - criticising others! Furthermore, he drives the point home with his last sentence twice, which is futile in meaning and has a value of what a 12 year old would say after losing a game of counterstrike.
If you are prepared to dish out a lot of crap, expect just as much to come back to you.
Dvorak said “Will Apple Adopt Windows?”, not “Apple will Adopt WIndows”. I don’t speak for this guy, nor do I read his articles, but everything that he said was totally harmless, just a projection of something that could happen.
Jackass indeed.
Dvorak makes his living driving up hits on the Web site.
I love how some people got really bent out of shape with Pogue’s article saying Vista is a rip-off of OS X Tiger, but they are silent when Dvorak writes this stuff.
If you are prepared to dish out a lot of crap, expect just as much to come back to you.
Excuse me? And you don’t dish out utter crap? ("You know, sometimes I wonder if you’ll ever finished your education.")
You’re rude. You make snide comments whenever you get the chance. You throw out attacks on the writers (see above). You yawn at what others write, and hell, you don’t bother to read what others write (like the time you responded to Bryan’s blog without bothering to read beyond the headline)! More often than not, you bring little to the discussion but noise, and take issue with *anything* we write that doesn’t bash Apple, glorify Microsoft, crap on the Mac and iPod, or support Sony’s using rootkits on their CDs. So yeah, “expect just as much to come back to you,” indeed. You’ve dished out a shitload of crap, and I’m returning the favor. Enjoy, and have a nice day.
Looks like someone got off on the wrong side of the bed.
Maybe you should sit back and take a look at how one dimensional or long-winding some of these blogs are, rather than resort to getting all personal with me.
You guys must have better things to do/write than get your panties in a bunch because of one writer on the internet. The OP depicts a negative image of Dvorak. What is the OP really trying to say/prove?
Everything that I have said I have backed them up, from overhyped Sony rootkits to the un-portable 20” iMac.
And, some of my posts gets deleted because I made corrections to some of the OPs’ posts including yours. You don’t like hearing the truth or what others have to say do you? Nor do you have any answer except to whine about people (except of course MacFan, the bread and butter of this site).
Face it, if you don’t want non-Apple people on or contributing to your site, then just say so. Put a notice on the main page - “We don’t like Microsoft/PCs and the people who uses them”, whatever.
Just don’t discriminate people or choose to ignore facts at your own whim.
informer,
The problem with your premise is Funktron has told you to tone down your rhetoric. So are you now going to say that Funktron is against PC users?
