Windows Vista - the accumulation of everything ripped-off.
I finally took a dive into Vista with RC1, as it seemed that every disk image of Beta 2 I tried getting previously was corrupted.
I wanted to give Vista the opportunity of a doubt,
I thought it would be so much better than XP,
but, honestly - with the few minutes I spent with Vista (after more than an hour of installation and around 10 reboots later) feels like it’s simply a theme for XP (a nicer theme than the Fisher Price default theme on XP), with an entire collection of things ripped-off from others. Innovative indeed.
From the few minutes I was able to stand Vista, here’s how I feel:
Gadgets is most definitely Konfabulator - err I mean Yahoo Widgets.
IE7 is most definitely Safari.
The theme feels like a theme on Linux with some OS X Flavoring.
The forced dialog screens (where the entire screen goes black except for a password screen or dialog box) are annoying as all hell - altho I do like it for some people that tend to ignore them, there should be a way for advanced users to turn it off!
As it’s not an official release I can’t really complain about this, but I swear none of my stuff works on it! I did an upgrade from XP and I got about 10 “Insert the CD for X software”. Even my games wouldn’t work! So after poking at XP for a few minutes I ended up playing Solitaire, as it seems that was the only thing I COULD do to keep me on Vista at least for a little while. But I’ll tell you - ”Solitaire never ran so great”.
I don’t know if it’s because I did an upgrade from XP or if this is “normal”, but after the 6th reboot I was about to give up on it. I didn’t time it but after more than an hour and about 10 reboots later I was playing Solitaire.
I honestly don’t really see any advantage over using XP - heck, I can’t even tell the difference other than as I said before, it feels like a theme for XP.
Maybe I just need to spend some more time with it. But after 10 minutes I was missing OS X.
I upgraded XP to Vista and I really don’t want to sit through the pain of another Windows install, not to mention I’ll lose all my programs (wait, I can’t use them in Vista! So there’s no difference!) so I’ll keep it for now and will be visiting the bowels of it again and giving it another chance.
I really don’t understand you Windows users, how you put up with this garbage. I used to use Windows and I hated Macs - until OS X was announced. Been much happier since.

thinkback
I’d love to see how fast it takes a company that only uses ideas they think of to go bankrupt.
Liam,
True, and that’s not really what I’m bashing, it’s that they claim it’s innovative that gets me when it’s clearly “borrowed” from somewhere else. And it’s not just Microsoft that I bash for that - Apple and Linux gets that from me too. Oh especially Linux (gnome? ubuntu?) for copying that forced dialog box screen from Vista! ARGH!!!
I kinda actually do like the sidebar and wish Konfabulator - err I mean Yahoo Widgets would incorporate that. It’s only fair since that’s where Gadgets came from. :p
You FOOL! You did an upgrade using a pre-release version of an operating system.
Maybe they’re innovating from their last Windows?
For those who has never used Linux or OSX, the new Windows is innovative.
So what’s the problem?
defaults write com.apple.mail PreferPlainText -bool TRUE
No thank you.
UnnDunn, well, yeah - but MS did want it tested, and one of the things that Vista is supposed to do is upgrade from XP. So I tested it that way. Plus I didn’t want to run around looking for drivers and reinstalling programs - too bad that made no difference at all! heh :p
informer, I thought “innovative” meant something “new”, “never done before”, etc. Not “as long as you haven’t seen someone else do this before” ...
And “Sure”, are you replying to a previous blog post? Why not reply in that post - since I don’t see how that relates to this one.
Sognix,
Read my last post,
but slowly.
Back when we were all using Windows 2000 and XP beta came out, I tested XP to the brim and decided that I didn’t need the eye candies and user friendly features and functions. I was still using 2000 until early 2005 when XP supported my notebook better, otherwise I would have kept on using 2000.
Vista however is different. I am expecting it to be a different animal to XP. This goes for the future applications and games that will be running on Vista.
Exciting times ahead!
I’m buying one of those new core2 duo imacs!

Exactly. The only reason anyone is using Windows is because it comes on most PCs.
Um no.
So you are saying that people would go out of their way to buy a PC with Windows on it?
So if the roles were reversed and OS X was on HP/Dell/Gateway systems, on 9 out of 10 PCs, and Windows XP was only on the Apple Mac, people would buy the Windows Mac instead of the OS X PCs offered by Dell/HP/Gateway?
I think they would continue to buy Dell/HP/Gateway PCs, personally. I don’t think people are choosing Windows. Most of the PC zealots on this board rarely cite the wonder of Windows as the reason they are on a Windows PC. Most talk about being able to build a PC, selection of games, selection of peripherals in regular stores…

Uh oh. Looks like I better put on my firefighting gear. We may have a few flames.
