WinFS demo on Channel 9

Channel 9 has posted an hour long video with some of the WinFS team showing demo’s of the WinFS beta 1. Two interesting things I’ve got from watching the video, WinFS will be released for Windows XP as well as Vista and it’ll also be compatible with non-WinFS computers, as they will see it as a regular NTFS file system.

thinkback

1.

Which begs the question… what is the point of Vista, anyway?  All the cool new technologies it’s supposed to bring will be either vaporware or XP-compatible.  All Vista is going to be at this point is Windows with reduxed graphics, which will probably fail in some specific way…

2.

Vista will bring everything together in a cohesive experience.

Yes WinFS will be made available for XP, but XP’s Explorer won’t take advantage of it like Vista’s Explorer will.

Yes IE7 with RSS will be made available for XP, but the RSS support won’t be systemwide like it will in Vista.

Yes, Avalon will be in XP, but it won’t have the Desktop Compositing Engine like Vista will.

Basically, while some of Vista’s core technologies will be made available for XP, you’ll have to get Vista to see the full implementation of those technologies.

It’s analogous to how Apple made QuickTime 7 with .h264 available for Panther, but you have to get Tiger to use iChat AV with .h264.
