Tiger Tip: Hack iSync to work with Motorola V551

Mac Geekery (not to be confused with Assorted Geekery) features an article describing how to get the Motorola V551 mobile phone to sync with iSync 2.0 in Tiger.

Tiger’s iSync 2.0 claims that it supports the Motorola V551 flip phone, but when I picked one up today, iSync refuses to deal with it. During Bluetooth device setup, the checkbox for iSync is grayed out. Suck, huh? Not so much, when you’re a Mac Geek.

Browsing around Apple Discussions and a few other sites, reports of the V551 working are mixed; it works for some, not for (many) others. As far as I could tell, not one user with the V551’s newest firmware (like me) reports that it works with iSync. And it just so happens that the latest firmware changed the phone’s identifier slightly. Aha…

If you own the Motorola V551 and have been having issues with it and iSync, be sure to give this a read.

Apple Doing Well with MP3s

The UK IT security news site:  The Register has reported that the Apple iPod Grabs Half the Flash Player Market. The iPod Shuffle now has 58% of the iPod market.  The Shuffle no doubt got it’s fame from the original iPod, which has almost all the market in HD MP3’s.  This is a rather amazing trend, since most third party MP3s offer more capacity at a lower price.  The article also reports that Apple has most of the legal music downloads as well.  This is again somewhat remarkable, since many other music stores offer downloads at 10% less that what Apple offers, and they also give complete album downloads at a large discount.  But it would also make sense that if Apple sells most MP3s, that most people are going to use their store.  The article also reports some not so good news for Apple, as their MP3s are not doing so well in Japan, though they are selling.
