Do We Really Need “Anti” Virus Software?

That is unless you count the latest and most deadly piece of malware on the Mac. A hideous evil thing that will scare you senseless.

Anti-Virus software. About 90% of computer users need it. It’s there to protect us from the evils of viruses, trojans, worms, spyware, key loggers etc. If you have a Windows PC it has become almost as essential a piece of kit as a web browser (though in the case of Windows it is generally down to the web browser that the need for anti-virus software is so great).

But what about other platforms. Well it’s safe to assume that on Linux there isn’t gonna be a huge amount of need for anti virus software. When an exploit is found it is likely to be patched very quickly and the sort of people who run Linux are likely to be the sort of people that know how to keep safe from these exploits. So all in all Linux is pretty much secure.

But then you have the Mac… We mac users are a proud, if somewhat stubborn, breed. We gloat about how there are no viruses for our system (and yes, while by general definition their are, by strict definition there aren’t) yet we are now under attack. Now instead of going into a Churchill inspired speech about how we’ll never surrender to the attackers I’m gonna look at whether the risk is big enough to warrant us all rushing out to buy anti-virus software.

There are 3 big anti-virus programs, Intego VirusBarrier, Norton Anti-Virus and Sophus Anti-Virus. Now Intego doesn’t seem to have anything wrong with it, besides the company that…

iTunes: Over One Billion Sold [UPDATED]

Apple’s iTunes Music Store has dished out its 1 billionth purchased song. I won’t bore you with trying to figure out how many iPods that would fill (that’s what the Math majors are for!), but considering that music downloading is still in its infancy, it’s an impressive total, indeed.

The iTunes Music Store was launched in April 2003 and sold its first million in roughly a week. It’s currently the leader in legal download market share.

There’s no word on who won yet, but here’s hoping it was me! Or at least someone I know so I can get in on one of those video iPods!

UPDATE The winner is Alex Ostrovsky of West Bloomfield, Michagin who downloaded Coldplay’s “Speed of Sound.” Alex will be the proud owner of ten iPods, a $10,000 iTunes gift card, and a 20” iMac; Apple will also create a scholarship to the Julliard School of Music in his name.

Apple to hold special event Feb 28

And this time for real!

Apple is up to something and will show the world what that something is on Feb 28 (or a week from today). Apple has sent out invitations to various media organizations (iLounge has confirmed that these invitations are legit) asking those invited to “Come see some fun new products from Apple.” The invitations are relatively unadorned; they just sport an iCal-like calendar page labeled with “Feb 28 2006,” which is not an obvious giveaway as to what the products may be. Various rumors have been floating around, from some sort of Apple tablet to a touch-screen iPod to Intel-based iBooks to new Mac minis.

Previous rumors suggested an Apple media event on February 22.

Apple has yet to show us some love and invite us. Where’s the love, Apple? Where’s the love? raspberry

iMac light sensor and LCD

Since the iMac has a light sensor to adjust the brightness of the standy light pulse, why doesn’t the LCD also adjust to light conditions?

For normal use, about half the brightness is about right, but when the sunlight brightens up the room, the LCD should adjust and go to a brighter setting.

Who says that people aren’t switching to the Mac?

They hear that Macs are easier to use but that's all they do, hear it

I’ve just been to PC World to have a look at the new iMacs in person as I’m looking to get one. Walk in and see two 17” iMacs sitting next to each other. A quick check of the about boxes finds that one is a G5 and one is a Core Duo and both look identical, as several people have said. I had to show it to the guy we were talking to because he didn’t think they had them in. I’m definitely getting one after playing with Front Row and Photobooth and other goodies (btw, Comic Life does rock as much as people say it does).

Anyway, enough about me and more about my story. I went over to a 20” iMac to have a look at the hugeness of it and then two people went over to the iMac I’d been looking at and someone from PC World talking to them about it. Then my dad starts talking to them when the PC World guy can’t answer a question and then I walk over. And so we spend about 20 minutes showing them the Mac and explaining all the benefits. They were buying the computer mostly for the woman that we were talking to and she’d obviously been talking to people who owned Macs.
