Site News: We’ve got a widget (sort of)

So I’ve spent this evening playing with the newly-released Dashcode beta, and I finally did something I’ve wanted to do for over a year now: create a Deep Thought Dashboard widget:

Uploaded Image

Pretty cool, eh? This is based on the Dashcode RSS widget template, and not counting the time it took to customize the appearance, I had a working widget in about two minutes. There are a few things I’d like the widget to do, but it’s a start.

Dashcode is going to be awesome when it goes final.

Apple iSight Disappears

Recently Apple’s webcam, the iSight, has vanished from the online store, as well as from Apple Retail Stores. The reason for the iSight’s sudden disappearance goes unexplained by Apple and the can only be speculated upon.

While it is true apple now ships all of its portables and iMacs with built in iSights, it still has no camera solution for the Apple Cinema Display. Apple currently ships Mac Minis, Mac Pros, and Xserves without any camera solution, so there is still a large market for the iSight.

MacWorld San Francisco 2007 is only a few weeks away now, and it is very possible Apple could update the iSight then, or update their display line with built in iSights. It is a possibility that this was planned, but Apple’s current stock of iSights ran short sooner than expected. It happened before with Apple during the summer of 2005 when Apple ran out of iMac G4s, which were later replaced by the iMac G5 the next month.

“Goodwill” Get a Mac ad aired by Apple

Last night, Apple launched another one of its beloved Get a Mac television advertisements named Goodwill. In the ad, PC and Mac decide to lay down their bitter rivalry in the spirit of the holidays, while PC attempts to make one last jab at Mac.

Unlike the majority of the other Get a Mac ads, nothing in this commercial is new. PC says nearly the exact same thing in the ad Counselor, and the same features are highlighted in many of the other ads. And of course, Apple is continuing to pose PC as the bad guy, with Mac as a constant friend, attempting to swing the PC using population over to their side.

Check out Goodwill and all the other Get a Mac ads on the Apple website.

MacSanta

The festivities are starting and members of the Mac developer community are feeling in the generous mood. MacSanta is offering software from many popular developers such as Flying Meat, Rogue Amoeba, Unsanity, Potion Factory and Bare Bones Software, all at 20% off. Help a Mac developer out this season by supporting them and saving at the same time. Don’t wait too long though, this offer runs out on the 25th of December.

Editor’s note: Be certain to check out Minim; Pilky wrote it. wink

iPhone released at long last; it’s not quite what you think

It looks like Brian Lam’s prediction of a Monday iPhone release was right on the money. Seriously. The long-awaited iPhone, complete with VoIP capabilities, has been released...by Cisco!

You may remember that last week Brian Lam of Gizmodo stated that the iPhone would be announced today, and lo and behold, it was. Brian Lam did say last week that “it isn’t what I expected at all.” Clearly. It seems that Cisco has owned the iPhone trademark since the 1990s. Why iphone.org redirects to Apple’s web site is still anyone’s guess, though.

If you’re looking for a VoIP handset and have $180-$200 to burn, give the iPhone a look. Also, we would like to congratulate Brian Lam for winning Daring Fireball Jackass of the Week honors. Way to go. You get a gold star. wink
