Free iMacs for DTK owners

Developers who bought a Developer Transition Kit can now exchange it with a brand new iMac for free. I guess this is Apple giving a bit back to developers for all the work they’ve done trying to get their apps Intel ready as the iMac costs $1299 but the DTKs cost $999

06 Keynote First Impressions

I didn’t have the chance to go to Macworld today, however I spent most of the morning glued to a computer screen, following everything that was going on. In lieu of more in-depth analysis (which you’ll get tomorrow, after I go to MWSF and play with the goodies), here’s a quick rundown of my initial reactions to the goods unveiled during Steve Jobs’ keynote.

The iPod remote thingie
The lack of iPod FM capabilities has been something that some have complained about for a while. Well, they’ll still complain, but at least there will be something. This little device serves as a remote for your iPod, much like the headphone-remote combo that was available for the older iPods (which I happen to own), only it plugs into the Dock port and comes with an extra feature--FM radio reception. It’s not a huge deal, but I’m sure for some this will be a welcome addition to Apple’s iPod accessory line.

iLife 06
I haven’t had a chance to really spend a lot of time pouring over Apple’s iLife site, but from what I have seen, it makes an already great suite of applications even better. the addition of Core Image and Core Video support to iPhoto and iMovie are welcome. I also like the calendars feature in iPhoto. Photocasting sounds interesting, but I’m not sure if it’ll really catch on. iWeb, however, looks like it’ll step on some developers’ toes. Again. And having access to photos in GarageBand just seems...weird.

News of the Weird: Apple stock switches to 8086

Apple’s stock closed the day at $80.86. Aside from the fact that the stock jumped by nearly $5 today, that’s a fairly nondescript number, right?  To the non-geek, sure. But in a bizzare twist of irony on the day Apple announced the release of Intel-based Macs, Apple’s stock price reflects the first x86 processor, the Intel 8086.

Apple’s stock has since jumped further in after-hours trading, thus ruining the somehow Zen-like perfection to the stock price.

The writer owns a small share in Apple Computer, Inc., which was not a factor in the writing of this damn near useless article.

Well that was weird

Mac… Book..... Mac… Book.....

No matter which way I say it, it still sounds like it’s a huge waste of 15 years worth of marketing. And with it being the MacBook Pro what will that make the PowerMac? The Mac Pro? And then what happens to the iBook? All this is confusing.

What is more confusing is the choice of Macs being updated. Why the Pow..erm.. MacBook and the iMac first? I mean, there are VERY few pro apps out there that are Universal Binaries. In fact I think the only one might be Quark (since when has Quark released an update so quickly?). Apple has said their pro apps will be out later in the year. But who honestly will care that these new Macs are 2-3x faster when they run pro apps like a machine they bought 2-3 years ago? At the prices they’ve set they aren’t going to appeal to consumers and there’s gonna be no major demand from pros until the pro apps are out. The thing is that Apple could’ve got away with releasing an Intel iBook or a Mac Mini that is technically faster than the PowerBook or iMac, because the majority of apps will run faster on the latter 2 machines.

Oh well, what about the rest of the keynote? Well it seems that Apple has pulled the carpet out from under another small developers feet with iWeb. Other than that the iLife and iWeb updates aren’t really that big. I suppose it was…
