PC versus Mac: a rebuttal

I share the same past as many of the people here, I was a member of XvsXP. And unfortunately it’s closed down now. Even more unfortunate is the site that is trying to replace it. I went on it today and saw that the owner had updated his page that talks about XvsXP. This post is a rebuttal to that page.

You will now need to pay to read a novice computer user write up their limited knowledge, experience, and ill informed opinion that is shot with a strong Mac bias throughout.† For your “modest fee”, you will also gain access to a site that goes offline at least once per week due to who knows what sort of technical difficulty.

I don’t get how someone who has written a site that is highly PC biased can complain about XvsXP being Mac biased. I thought that the whole idea of the site was to be an unbiased alternative to XvsXP. And XvsXP did go down fairly often, but not every week, often due to database problems. Many sites has suffered this and I doubt that PCversusMac will be magically immune.

Either way, it is impossible to compare two OS’s in the abstract. OS’s are not self contained entities: they require hardware, users, third party software, outlets for purchase and support, internet and network connectivity, etc. Another fundamental problem with the scoring system was the lack of weighting; the same scoring weight was given to how each OS handles the caps lock…

William Shatner

William Shatner.
The name brings many images to the minds of many people.
Unfortunately for Mr. Shatner, all these images are essentially the same one; Captain James Tiberius Kirk, of the Starship Enterprise.

I understand that after the cancellation of the original Star Trek television series, he went through a rather long ‘dry spell’ of work - some ten years without a decent gig, all because of his fame in Star Trek.
I consider this man to be one of the finest actors to have graced our screens, and it’s a damn pity that he was never able to shrug the role of Kirk.

Last year, he released an album, produced by Ben Folds (of Ben Folds Five fame) entitled Has Been.
I’ve only just aquired a copy of this, and I initially listened to it with fear that it would be akin to his seminal effort, a spoken-word version of that Beatles song Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.

I am, without a doubt, astounded. This album is beautiful and touching and sad. From the opening cover version of Pulp’s Common People, to the ending Real, there’s not a moment when I don’t feel something for this man.
You’ll Have Time has the confronting refrain “you’re gonna die!” and the line “by the time you hear this, I might be dead too” while That’s Me Trying is a letter to his daughter, attempting to effect reconciliation after not seeing her for twenty years. It’s so damned sad, it practically makes…

Lawsuit: iTunes in violation of antitrust regulations

Continuing the recent fit of lawsuit madness, Apple is being sued by a less-than-thrilled iTunes user, because it does not work with his non-Apple music player. From the Reuters article:

There is legal precedent for such claims, but courts usually conclude competing products as viable alternatives, Gellhorn said.

“As a practical matter, the lower courts have been highly skeptical of such claims,” Gellhorn said.

It should be interesting to see how this turns out.

Apple sues ThinkSecret.com

Oh my! Cnet news.com reports that Apple has sued Mac rumor site ThinkSecret.com, which is by far the most reliable rumor site. Now we know why they have been so reliable:

In its latest lawsuit seeking to clamp down on leaks, Apple Computer has added credibility to several hot rumors, including plans to offer a cheaper Macintosh and its own line of office software.

When you’re good, you’re good. When you’re too good, you’re sued. So I guess that all but confirms several recent rumors?
